Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's first 45 mins was with student 1. We had a good time playing! He was very talkative, so we spoke a lot, I tried to review as many Chinese words with him as possible. Today's new vocab and phrase for him were: door, don't move, sheep, candy and happiness. The second 45 mins was with student 2. She was in the mood to sing and perform today, so we did lots of "performance" together, she enjoyed singing and dancing and was very animated. Perhaps I'll find a way to teach her some Chinese songs and dance. Today she learned: orange color, magic, doll, stop and "I'm 4 years old"."
"The student and I continued to review. When we determined he was caught up and confident in the material, we began working one chapter ahead. This time, instead of focusing on writing, as we did last week, we worked on conversation and reading. I feel good about his progress in learning Chinese. His grades remain solid, and his pronunciation seems to be improving."
"Taught the student the 4 tones, and also pinyin. Then we learned a few Chinese characters. He picked up all these very fast. And in the end, we talked about Chinese culture."
"The student scored 105% on a recent large homework assignment. He also felt good about the test last Friday. He edited his final presentation PowerPoint on Mariachi bands: origins of Mariachi music, band size, instruments, national symbols, and adaptation."
"The student was concerned about not knowing a lot of vocabulary. So, I let her pick a theme (school) and then we created a list of vocabulary and learned new words. We also worked on some pronunciation with diphthongs. Then, we ended with some translation practice using tenses she has been learning in a new context of practical daily conversation.
"The student worked on conjugating preterite verbs in Spanish. The student also reviewed the Spanish phonetic alphabet in conjunction with recalling Spanish vocabulary. This is an important tool in solving translation work in the future, so we will be sure to review this thoroughly. The student has a good attitude and is able to stay focused with minimal redirection."
