The student and I began our session by covering Pascal's triangle. I explained that Pascal's triangle is useful for finding the coefficients of a binomial expansion. We discussed the pattern of the triangle and how to find the numbers without memorizing them. The tricky part of these problems is to remember to make every-other term negative when the binomial involves subtraction instead of addition. Overall, she understood Pascal's triangle quickly, so we moved on to the next section in her textbook on binomial expansion. This section covered how to do a binomial expansion without using Pascal's triangle. I explained that this is useful in cases where the binomial is raised to a big power, so it's not practical to write out Pascal's triangle. The formula for finding any term of a binomial expansion involves factorials, a concept she hadn't seen before. We discussed what a factorial is and how to divide factorials. She caught on quickly. At first, these problems were a little tricky for her because it can be difficult to figure out what the variable k is to plug into the formula. We practiced many of these problems, and by the end she was more clear on how to find k and successfully use the formula. With some more practice, she will have no issues solving these problems. We then very briefly began discussing probability until the end of our session. We will continue with that on Monday.

Today, the student and I started with a previously administered Earth Science practice test. He did well and demonstrated proficiency in his use of the reference tables. He notified me that he has the Earth Science Practical exam coming up soon. We reviewed what will be expected of him at each station. He appears to have a strong understanding of the stations. During the second half of the session, he worked on Algebra questions. We went over concepts including the Compound Annual Interest Formula, the Cumulative Frequency and Median, the Simplest Radical Form, and comparing algebraic graphs. He did well and was able to apply these concepts to follow up questions. Next time, we will start with some cumulative frequency practice questions and then proceed with more Algebra questions.

The student completed several assessment sheets that I left after the previous session. Together we reviewed the concept of a number line, and it seems that she is most comfortable with that method. I encouraged her to draw the number line for each problem, and she began to grasp the concepts better. We also worked on exponents, which she seems very comfortable with. We also explored angles and basic geometry. I left the student with several review exercises on exponents and angles, which we will assess at our next session.
