Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session and we mostly reviewed the student's assignments from the course that she took last semester. After reviewing and discussing the assignments, it became clear that she does not have problems with the actual course material. In fact, she has a solid understanding of statistics. The student's written assignments could benefit from improved clarity, succinctness, and completeness. Our strategy over the course of the semester will be that we discuss strategies on how to improve the presentation of her results. I will also double-check and verify that she has answered all of the questions that the professor has asked. I am confident that having a second pair of eyes to review her homework will greatly strengthen the quality of written assignments."
"The student and I worked through several homework problems related to the conservation of energy and the conservation of momentum. The problems are high level problems that require students to put a lot of concepts together at the same time. I modeled the solving process for her so she could understand conceptually what was happening."
"We covered the topics of enthalpy, acid-base reactions, and ideal gas laws. Because the student mentioned that most of her struggles came from understanding the concepts, I spent more time walking her through the problems by giving a strong explanation of the concepts she had to think about so she could answer the problem better. For the most part, it looked like she definitely understood what was going on and really enjoyed my explanations. If anything, what she is struggling with the most is feeling overwhelmed at the amount that she has to learn in order to catch up again. We went over her practice review sheet that she had obtained from her teacher and it would be a preview of what to expect on her final coming up on Wednesday. For the most part, she understood the questions and the answers to them and was able to get some of the answers on her own without my help."
"The student and I began the research for her ecosystems project. We completed the research for the animals and the food chain, and began looking at the plants. She was very engaged and asked great questions to guide our research. I expect that we will finish the research during our next session and can begin writing the essay."
"In this session we reviewed the student's performance on a practice exam. In particular, we covered electronegativity, polar bonds, and balancing redox equations. The student struggles most with remembering the material that must be memorized. I will provide her with devices to help with this. We reviewed strategies for answering SAT MC questions. She is to complete part C of the practice exam and begin studying organic functional groups."
"The student now has a book with practice chemistry subject tests, and during this lesson, we began to work through the book's diagnostic test. We did problems which covered such topics as the properties of halogens, the numbers of electrons in molecular orbitals, Dalton's theories and Gay-Lussac's law, the basic functional groups of organic compounds, molecule shapes and polar bonds, electrolytes, oxidation numbers, and hydronium and its relationship to acid solutions. He did a great job concentrating and comprehending new information. During our next lesson, we'll keep working through the problems in his subject test books, and exploring concepts which he still has difficulty with. Going through the entire set of practice exams should provide the student with a good foundation for preparation for the exam in the fall."
