Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In our final session, we focused on reading comprehension questions, which have been the biggest challenge for the student. She's shown a lot of improvement and has totally mastered the strategies. We finished by discussion of study and practice strategies from this point forward. She's going to do excellent on the test!"
"We spent 3/4 of session going in depth over approaches to analytical and argument essays. The remainder of class was vocab and sentence completion work."
"My third and final GRE tutoring session with this student went well. We started by working through the verbal reasoning section 4 of practice test 1. Although he did not agree with some of the reasoning for the correct answers, he did understand why they were the best choices for the questions. Then we discussed strategies for the analyze an issue and analyze an argument essays. I encouraged him to reference specific people, events, books, or other entities in his issue essay to prove concrete support for his thesis. I also helped him to focus his argument essay on analyzing the flaws present in the prompt's assumptions and to determine what questions he needed answered before agreeing with the argument. He will continue studying on his own."
"The student and I reviewed ways to tackle short passages: note taking; identifying topic, scope, purpose, point; and evaluating wrong answer choices. To follow-up our session, she can practice with provided problem sets. We will spend our next session tackling long passages."
"The student and I continued to emphasize the verbal portion of the GRE for our sessions. Consequently, his vocabulary continued to play a large, beneficial part in his success with the sentence equivalence and text completion question types. Aside from a few times where he overthought a prompt or missed a small piece of evidence, he excelled remarkably. I would say his correct answer percentage was around 90-95% which is fantastic. Next section, we will focus on mostly reading comprehension, as he has had some trouble with finding specific evidence to support the choice of certain answers."
"In today's session we continued our focus on the Verbal section of the GRE. We continued working through material on Text Completion, Sentence Equivalence, and Reading Comprehension. We spent more time today working on Reading Comprehension. We read through several passages, discussed several test-taking strategies and tips, and reasoned through practice questions. To build vocabulary, we looked up the definitions of unknown words and added them to our notes. During the last half of the session we began a GRE Verbal practice test, and made it through the first 20 questions. The student had a very positive attitude and was fully engaged and actively participating throughout the session. We spoke about some areas that were causing difficulty (namely, aspects of the Reading Comprehension section, and the 3-blank Text Completion), and will continue to focus on these in later sessions. We also spoke briefly about long-term planning, and when we might shift gears to the GRE Quantitative section (after 2-3 more sessions devoted to GRE Verbal prep). In sum, we covered a lot of ground in terms of working through practice problems and developing strategies for effective test-taking. This was another successful session. We scheduled our next session for Tuesday."
