Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I worked more with Laplace Transforms. We worked on more problems from his homework assignment, which this time used the Laplace Transform to find the solution to differential equations. Today, we found specific solutions by using given initial conditions."
"We talked about general problem solving strategies before going over kinematics homework problems. The student has a good intuition about velocity and acceleration, but he needs to spend more time working with graphs and finding slopes. I told him to contact me by email if he has issues with his next homework."
"We first reviewed scientific notation. The student had a handle on converting standard to scientific, but needed help going in reverse. I showed her how the exponent was the key to the conversion and how to position the decimal point when converting. We practiced converting both ways with plenty of examples. We also reviewed radicals and expressions involving them. She already had experience simplifying radicals and adding/ subtracting like radicals. We practiced combining the two concepts in more complicated expressions. After a couple of examples, she had a handle on the material. I sent her some additional practice to work on until our next session."
"The student and I continued working through the diagnostic SAT subject test, which included multiple choice questions as well as true-false-cause questions. Some of the material we covered was new for him. Among the various topics were pKa and Ka, the autoionization of water, dissolution of ionic compounds, the definition of a mole, the shapes of orbitals and the Schrodinger equation, molecular geometries, and states of matter. He was concentrated and asked interesting questions. For our next lesson, we'll try to get through the rest of the diagnostic test."
"The student worked on significant figures and conversion problems for his chemistry course today. He seemed motivated and wanted to get through the work. We got through the majority of the problems. He will do the rest on his own time. We will meet again on Sunday."
"We reviewed general study habits for chemistry and discussed scientific notation and some general topics to come, like electron configuration, limiting reagents, balancing equations, and electron configuration. The student is excited and ready to start into his chemistry class work."
