Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we were practicing how to ask directions to arrive to a place, the verbs andare, tornare o girare, and vocabulary of places, but the student made a good point: for her the exercise was not making sense because she thought that she was not going to use it. She plans to have a map at that time so I change the topic and gave her some new vocabulary of main questions and words that she could use once she is in Italy. I am sending her the material in case she wants to practice or memorize the vocabulary."
"We briefly talked about the student's recent vacation in Italy, which she enjoyed very much! The rest of the session was devoted to reading and translating the lyrics of a song by Italian songwriter Fabrizio De Andre'. The lyrics are simple, poetic, and contain many commonly used words. We used the same Google doc to translate, add comments about the grammar rules used, and rewrite the lyrics in those parts that did not follow the modern spoken Italian. We will use more songs in the future, and I asked the student to listen to them and try to memorize the words."
"Today we started with vocabulary and kanji quizzes. There appeared to be a lot of difficulty, so we went back to decide again the goal and plan for classes henceforth. We will focus on N4 this year. About 10 kanji and vocabulary and 8 grammar patterns per week. We went over some new kanji and vocabulary, and then learned 8 new grammar patterns. The student's homework is to write sentences for each grammar pattern, and to study the kanji and associated vocabulary words. There will be a short quiz next time (Japanese to English translation) focused on these new kanji and grammar."
"The student and I covered verb conjugations and indirect pronouns. She has some difficulty recognizing verbs in conjugated forms. Study strategy: practice new vocabulary in complete sentences to enhance memory. She has a better understanding of the more commonly used verbs and which tenses to concentrate on."
"We mostly went over conjugating verbs and putting together simple sentences. We discovered some holes in the student's background that have been making things confusing. We talked about parts of a sentence and about terminology surrounding verb conjugation. I also briefly noted that there are some things he will have to take time to memorize. I will continue to try and build his confidence."
"The session went very well. I explained and worked on reflexive verbs and pronouns, partitive words (del, dello, della, degli, delle, dei), and how to use them and translate them in English. We went over the conjugation of "potere,' "volere," and "dovere." We also started to learn direct object pronouns."
