Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Arcadia, CA Science tutoring
Today's session was good. We went over some very important concepts that I think will help the student understand a lot of other concepts. We started off reviewing and clarifying some questions about ionization energies. I think she had a better understanding of the material this time around, but those concepts just take practice. We will continue to incorporate them in future sessions. We finished off the lesson by introducing Lewis dot structures, octet rules, and bonding. She got these concepts down right away without any trouble.

The student did a lot of practice homework problems over the weekend, and so in today's session, we worked through some of the problems that he got wrong. He has an exam this Wednesday, and I think that this session helped him find out which topics he needs to review for the exam. I think that he should spend some time reviewing the rules for drawing Lewis structures and resonance structures and also determining geometric structures.

Today, the student and I reviewed most of the concepts we covered on Thursday since he has an exam tomorrow. First, we worked on balancing acid-base neutralization equations. We then moved on to calculating pH and pOH. Finally, we went over the definitions of a Bronsted-Lowry acid and base and identified conjugate acid/base pairs. Overall, he did very well. He didn't need much assistance for a majority of the questions. I will be emailing material for review.

We reviewed for the student's earth science test tomorrow. We covered rocks, minerals and how to identify them, the types of erosion, plate tectonics and accompanying concepts, weather patterns, temperature, pressure, humidity, and topography. I believe she will do well on her exam if she takes her time, uses the reference tables when needed and doesn't guess, and focuses on the material. I left her with the astronomy section, which her mom said she would help her with in the morning before school.

The student and I worked on chapters 40-42 in her book to prepare for her test on Tuesday. I made note cards of terms she had repeatedly confused, and helped her fill in her class study guide. Wherever she was confused about the material, we stopped to discuss it more, look up more information on the topic, and make sure she had a rounded understanding of the topic. We also looked through all three chapters, making sure she felt confident in her knowledge for the test. As we had already gone into most of the material in depth, we focused on refreshing and cementing her knowledge. I showed her how to add test-like questions to her notes to help her study. In this session we focused on study techniques such as repetition, note cards, question-information notes, and visual diagram making. I am confident that she did very well on her test.

Today the student and I reviewed concepts from Statics, the prerequisite course to this Mechanics course. We went over step-by-step procedures of how to approach statics problems and how to reduce complex systems down to simple, familiar problems. He struggled mostly with remembering concepts from statics, but he tackled each problem wholeheartedly and seemed more comfortable with the material as we went along. At the end of our session, I suggested that he review the material we discussed today and preview the other homework questions he will have to complete as a part of his first homework assignment. I also suggested he preview the material to be discussed in his next lecture. I was very pleased with this first session and look forward to working with him in the coming weeks!
