Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student is starting a new topic in his pre-calculus class: probability. We focused the session on using both the combination/permutation formula and setting up fractions to determine probability. The homework assignment that we completed together covered basic scenarios like the probability of getting certain cards from a deck, choosing certain people out of a group, or choosing an item out of a collection. He seemed to have a more firm grasp on the material. I hope this will serve him well as he starts taking the quizzes and eventually prepares for the exam."
"Over the last two sessions, the student and I have worked on using trigonometric functions to solve for missing angles and sides of a triangle. We have reviewed and applied the law of sines and the law of cosines. He initially struggled with multi-step problems that required the use of both laws. However, after working through problems on his worksheet, I noticed a significant improvement in his understanding of the material."
"The student has a test tomorrow on matrices. She has a good hold on the material, so we went over a few practice problems. There was one word problem that she had trouble with, but once she set up the necessary equations, she could do the required operations. I think she'll do fine on her test tomorrow."
"Concepts: Rationale root rest, leading coefficient test, finding zeroes algebraically, increasing/decreasing maxes/mins in piecewise functions and complex numbers. Struggles: No real struggles seen in this session, he had a strong understanding of the material. Attitude: He was energetic and worked well on the problems I wrote for him as always. Strategies: I just restated to him to make sure he works slowly and is careful on the simple calculations that are more likely than not what he would lose any points on. Extra practice: None this session, but he seemed more than prepared for the quiz he had the following day, and giving him more homework would not have helped much. Grades: He scored a near perfect 51/52 on the last quiz he took after our first session, which is great news. Comments/Concerns: It seems that he is a very smart guy overall, and the session probably helped him achieve his high score, which is good to know!"
"This evening, Alex and I covered Law of Sines II and Law of Cosines. He scored well on his assessments, 100% and 90% (respectively). We are making good progress and anticipate completing the course by the end of the week."
"We covered the following concepts: solving quadratic equations, quadratic formula, solving inequalities, function transformations/ translations, graphing trigonometric functions, amplitude, period, phase shifts and vertical shifts, and graphing absolute value functions. We identified topics for her to study with respect to her upcoming in-class quiz."
