Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Tonight, we reviewed material covering organic chemistry. While playing on the same basic chemical principles of inorganic chemistry, there are definitely some unique properties of organic chemistry deserving of their own field of study. Unfortunately, the basics rely on memorization of a lot of new names and structural formulas."
"Discussed stoichiometry and worked through problems finding limiting reagent, amount of product produced, and excess reagent. Student struggles most with coefficients, mole ratios, and calculating molecular weights (she uses the coefficient as a multiplier). She understood this better once we talked about calculating the molecular weight and percent water of hydrates. For algebra 2, we went over log rules and how to solve for x when log is on both sides."
"We went over oxidation number, how to find oxidation numbers, how to use oxidation numbers to calculate the total oxidation changes in a chemical equation, and valence electrons. The student is very receptive and learns well. I will come up with challenging problems for him on our next session."
"The focus of this session was reviewing the material for the 3 lab test questions. I urged her to put units into the math to figure out the eccentricity of an ellipse; to make accurate measurements when producing the circles to locate the earthquake; and observations for identifying the rocks and minerals. I urged her to go into the exam with some confidence."
"In today's session, we worked on practice problems dealing with conservation of energy and springs. All of the student's homework problems were pretty involved and took some time to work through, but I believe that the fundamentals behind each problem started to make a little more sense to her as we talked them over. She is going to finish this homework assignment, then we will go over any other material in our session tomorrow."
"Today, the student and I worked on equilibrium problems, Le Chatelier's principle, kp/kc conversions, effect of heat/ inert gas/ volume/ pressure/ solids on shifts, and acid/ base conjugates. She had a great attitude and was eager to try out problems on her own. I provided her with strategies for identifying conjugate acid/ base, Le Chatelier's principle, and ICE charts."
