We covered the differences between C and C++. We reviewed a simple program demonstrating the usage of the standard library, the linker, the compiler, the make program and included files. We covered main and the usage of printf and stdin. This required a discussion of arrays and memory layout for programs. We discussed the architecture of most computers including ALU, decoder and memory blocks. I was able to bring and share several books. The student chose "The C Programming Language" to borrow and start studying further. Next session will cover any questions that arise during the week from this text. We also discussed the field of general computation algorithms and why they are useful (efficiency with large data sets). This session mostly covered the programming and runtime environment. Next time, we will start diving into specific language features. The student seemed excited and interested about the subject area.

The student and I spent the session building a program that simulates a game of poker. We spent most of our time looking at different data types and how they might be useful in this problem, as well as how to correctly implement them in Python. In particular, we focused on tuples, nested lists, and proper the proper syntax for declaring, checking, and iterating through them. He successfully created a deck of cards able to shuffle, and a method that deals to a number of players given by the user. Due to his web development experience, he feels most comfortable defining the user interface and making the program "game-like." He will add more of these features before we meet again on Friday. He will continue working on the second half of the program that compares hands and determine which player is the winner.

This was an introductory class to the Java language. The student is wanting to stay ahead of the course so we began without having any assignments. Instead, we just went over basic syntax and discussed data flow through the language. For the next session we should have assignments and projects to work with. Even if we don't, we can still have a fruitful class and begin examining the basic data structures listed in her syllabus.
