Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed the Related Rates and Differentials practice that was assigned to him. We reviewed the Related Rates problems, which he completed to 80% accuracy. We worked through some rough spots, but he understood the basic tenets. He shared with me that he was not comfortable with his work on extrema, so we reviewed Rolle's Theorem and how to find extreme values. He completed the two example problems that I assigned to 90% accuracy. I assigned him the completion of those problems that I gave him on Thursday, as well as to begin work on Mean Value Theorem and First Derivative test for this upcoming Thursday. This should take him roughly 2 hours to complete."
"We reviewed new material today, going over the first and second derivative tests, essentially figuring out where functions increased, decreased, and changed concavity. This section was not too tough to go through and seemed fairly straightforward for the student. We later went over some older problems, covering Rolle's theorem. There were some issues identifying and checking the assumptions of this theorem, specifically tests for discontinuities. The student will continue working on this week's homework as he prepares for his calculus exam next week."
"Today we covered induction (with a brief tangent into modular arithmetic). In the beginning the induction involved only rules using series, but by the end we began covering induction on multiplicative rules for exponents."
"Today, we looked through the solutions to the first and second midterms. Then, we worked on reviewing the student's homework on double integrals. The student is showing great improvement."
"We continued on our preparation of calculus. This week, we discussed more methods of finding derivatives. As usual, we started with a review of what we covered the week before, then we moved on to finding derivatives of log and exponential functions. Then, we learned to find derivatives of implicit functions. With that, now we have covered all the differentiation techniques. Next class, we will move on to applications of derivatives."
"We continued with basic derivatives and then moved on to a sheet that the student had for test review. It is material that was a lot further up in the unit, so we basically just went through the mechanics. We will be continuing to push forward during our next session because he has a final to take and a few more topics need to reinforced."
