We discussed the homework she was working on, and also re-visited the lab material that she needed to complete. The homework she was working on involved reactions involving aromatic substitution, and additionally amino acid synthesis reactions. The student had a very good understanding of the aromatic substitution reactions. She was able to determine whether or not a group was a deactivating group or an activating group. She was able to demonstrate to me that she was understand the properties that influence the effect of electron withdrawing or electron donating groups. We then moved into understanding the different mechanisms that allow amino acid pep-tide chains to form, and the influential factors of pH on amino acids. I learned that carbonyl Chemistry had not been discussed, before taking on the challenges of amino acid reactions. We worked through the general concepts of the carbonyl Chemistry and developed a solid foundation to build on for amino acid synthesis in the next few sessions.
