Now, as we read, instead of just stopping to define words she doesn't know we are going to both keep lists of the words and I will quiz her at the start of each new session. She will be back in 9th grade pre-AP English in January and is getting a head start on reading A Tale of Two Cities.

We continued our discussion of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and also addressed Batman: Year One, having both read chapters 1 and 2 last evening. We then began parsing these stories in an effort to determine with or not they fit into the category of an allegory. We found numerous symbols in the book which we were able to relate to real-life constructs and concluded that the story is an allegory, and that Batman's parents are his Achilles heel. We will both complete the reading of Batman: Year One before our next meeting.

The student took her test today. I will have it graded by Wednesday. Afterwards, she completed Sections 13 and 14 on Root Words. She did fantastically in 13 but needed some reminders about the meanings of words in 14. For homework, I assigned her more Root Words and to finish A Tale of Two Cities.

The student and I spent a lot of time brainstorming ideas for his essay on Apocalypse Now. I helped him develop a thesis and begin an outline. We also looked over a history assignment about Booker T Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.

Today, we practiced diagramming sentences more in depth. We also focused heavily on identifying adjectives and adverbs in sentences. We then worked on identifying helping and linking verbs as well as conjunctions. For tomorrow's session, I am going to give the student a quiz to see how she will do on the assessment after her break.
