During our second session we discussed and revised the student's outline. An initial concern was whether we were addressing all the questions in the assignment. Going line-by-line through the guidelines his professor had provided, we refined several ideas. One of the questions that he had was how much of the essay should be research and how much should be personal reflection. While there is room for his own thinking, it is clear that the assignment requires the use of sources to present and then refute his argument. He had already prepared an opening paragraph, which included his thesis statement. I read this and made some minor corrections. It may be, by the end of this process, that the thesis will be abbreviated. He may find it cumbersome to argue the two points that comprise his thesis at present. Based on the length of the essay (six pages) we need to be aware of presenting an in-depth discussion, and having two points to prove might be counter-productive. A major area that needs follow up is that he needs to decide where and how his texts and the articles that his professor included in the syllabus will be used. The readings are intended to provide the substance for his argument. In order to accomplish this, he must become extremely familiar with these texts. As his professor stated in his "Writing Tips," it is vital that he has done all his reading so that he can identify those areas that pertain to his topic. I strongly recommend that he spend time reviewing his source material. Another suggestion I offered is to write a "mini-essay" -- a shorter version without any sources added. This will provide a foundation, which can be used to verify the organization and to look for coherence in the overall essay. This technique also helps break writer's block, which in this situation might be occurring because the student is not entirely sure how he will incorporate source material into his writing. This was a very productive session.

The student and I met today to finish editing her college admission essay. She'd done a wonderful job revising from yesterday's meeting. We read through the essay forward and sight read backward to check for flow, grammar, and punctuation. I showed her a few editing tricks for future use. The piece is strong, and only needs her "final word," which she is working on. We discussed the types of things to cover in this final sentence.

I edited the student's final draft. He was having a hard time getting his paper down to the number of pages needed per the professor. I believe that his paper is substantially better than the rough draft and has addressed many of the concerns of the professor after they met and reviewed his work. The student maintains a patient and positive attitude about his work and demonstrates respect for me. I am very happy to have him as a student and believe that his grade on this paper will be an improvement from the past as he has taken everything I have recommended and worked hard both in class and out of class by working with classmates, participating in class, making time for professor appointments, and implementing various suggestions. His spelling, punctuation, and grammar on the final draft was of superior quality. I am hopeful that this paper will be the best grade to date on an English 1301 writing assignment for this student.

In this session, the student and I worked on a descriptive essay for her college English class. She chose to describe her best friend and came up with the mandatory 20 adjectives as well as an example of personification. Her writing skills continue to improve with only minor errors in word placement, capitalization, and spelling - problems that she identifies and fixes herself. We also started working on a poetic interpretation essay she has due on Thursday.
