Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered Writing section questions, both the 'identifying sentence error' and 'improving sentences' types. The student did quite well, but she did have some difficulty with ones concerning seldom-used grammar rules, so we identified a few of these for future reference. No major issues from today."
"In this session, I wanted to split it in half to focus on two key areas. Student's writing is improving by focusing on thorough application of examples. I gave her a new prompt, but one similar to another she had written before so examples would not be difficult to think up. This was to allow her to practice focusing all evidence back to a clear thesis. After she finished, we considered the rubric for the SAT essay and applied it to four student essay responses to the prompt she just wrote about. She used the rubric to grade each of the essays and then we compared her grading to what the SAT graders gave. I then had her grade her own paper. For the second half, I wanted to go over more critical reading passages. I had her practice from some sample tests and then discuss her thought process."
"In the first session, we began with critical reading, as this is the student's main concern for the test, and then we did some math. We need to focus on the critical reading passages taken from novels, and less on non-fiction."
