Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I worked outside. He was very competent today, and seemed to understand most of my questions clearly. He not only seemed more able to understand questions, but more able to listen to the readings I gave. He was able to recall information bits from the middle of sentences, which is unusual for him (he tends to focus on the end of sentences to find answers). He also responded very well to using the slide as positive reinforcement for correct answers. A good day overall!"
"The student and I reviewed how we can use a piece of text to answer a writing prompt. This prompt involved analyzing and comparing the settings of two texts. He and I practiced annotating the text to determine which pieces of evidence to use in the writing. We also practiced how to write an engaging and attention grabbing introductory paragraph. He practiced writing leads, bridges, and theses in his writing."
"We read a story together and the student did a great job using the pictures to make predictions and to figure out what some words mean. We reviewed two sight words, up and run. She created detailed sentences using the words. I have also been trying to have her work on her handwriting, making sure her words are on the bottom line. We also used an app on the iPad to review sight words and she has done a nice job recognizing the words and reading them."
"The student and I worked on the statement of purpose for his thesis again this session. He seems to be increasingly confident in the direction and organization of this critical section of the paper. We spent time not only making sure that the thesis statement was strong and properly placed but also that all the supporting paragraphs were clear, concise, and to the point. We focused on sentence structure, word use, syntax, and mechanics to create an even, readable flow. He will continue working on the statement of purpose and apply what he has learned to the more detailed chapters of the thesis between now and our next session. Overall, he is making significant progress in developing a paper that will fulfill his and his readers' expectations."
"In today's session, we worked on fluency and we also did a read aloud. The student read two books today. He has improved with his fluency since the last time we met. He is definitely showing progress in reading."
"The student completed his math homework with little help (adding 3 numbers). He read "Families at Work" and completed his reading log. He was able to answer 5/7 comprehension questions orally while reading. He practiced his foundations unit 5 words in preparation for his test tomorrow. He read the words and spelled them, breaking them into syllables to spell. He was able to name the larger 2-digit number given two numbers and using his 10's number cards."
