Anatomy Tutoring review by Courtney in Paterson, NJ
The student and I covered aldol reactions, Michael addition, and Claisen condensation reactions. We reviewed the concepts in detail, practiced the mechanisms, and did practice problems from the student's book. At the end of the session he understood these reactions and how to solve problems dealing with them.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Brandon in Paterson, NJ
We went over reactions of alcohols. Specifically, we covered reduction and oxidation of alcohols, Grignard reagents, and complex synthesis reactions. We spend a good amount of time going over the reaction mechanisms behind each type of reaction, going over the reasoning behind using each type of reaction in order to get a better understanding of each one's use in synthesis. Overall, the student understood the material very well, and we did plenty of practice problems to reinforce it.

We went over conjugation and diels alder reactions. The student was struggling most with remembering new reactions but responded well to comparing them to things we have already went over in terms of similar equations, substrates, leaving groups etc. I left the student with two packets that reviewed what reactions we covered last time. We also went over the lab that she will do next week and tips for being successful in that lab class.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Keith in Paterson, NJ
We worked thru several synthesis problems. The student was not sure what some of the reagents were, so I helped him recognize a per-acid reagent, and then I showed him how to name an ester and a ketone. We then worked thru several problems that give a list of reagents to select from and he did great. We went over the advantages and disadvantages of various reagent choices.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Benjamin in Paterson, NJ
I did a basic introduction to proton NMR and how to analyze displacement from TMS signal, integral trace and splitting. We practiced with some simpler problems and worked up to homework. On the homework, the student worked through a sample problem that used data from C13 NMR and IR spec to determine an unknown structure. We will meet again to go over his homework.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Melissa in Paterson, NJ
The student and I covered naming for ionic compounds as well as covalent compounds. After several questions from her worksheet, she felt comfortable enough to finish the rest by herself. Most of the time I was simply telling her that yes, she had the correct answer! Once in awhile she would make a small mistake, but I think that if she reviews her answers during the test on Friday, she will catch these mistakes. She still needs to ask her teacher if she needs to memorize the polyatomic ions and the cations that have multiple charges; if she needs them memorized for the test, but doesn't memorize them, this would be bad news! We also covered a lab that she did recently, which starts to talk about solubility rules. There was a particularly challenging question asking her to specify 6 unknown ions, but I tried to walk her through the process of figuring these out by comparing her results to part 1 of the lab. She took notes on how we derived our answers and I was simply guiding most of the time. She said she only missed one point on her naming quiz, which is great! The only mistake was a small thing, one of the same things she tended to overlook today during practice, but I feel confident that she will be able to correct these small errors on the test.
