## Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

The student and I began our session by examining Geometry concepts fundamental to the SAT. We looked at triangles - how triangles show us the sum of the angles in any polygon, angle/side relationships in triangles, what side lengths constitute a viable triangle, and the external angle theorem. We then moved on to right triangles. We examined and applied the Pythagorean Theorem and special right triangles with sides in a ratio of 3-4-5 or 5-12-13 or with angles in a ratio of 45-45-90 or 30-60-90. I have assigned a math practice section (pages 50-53) for this week. In critical reading, we looked at the three types of passage: analysis, argument, and narrative. We discussed the purpose and the central idea of each. She then read a complex Physics analysis. Contemplating these root concepts helped her to answer correctly 5/6 questions with minimal rereading. I'd like her to keep the types, purposes, and central ideas of passages in mind as she completes the critical reading section on pages 43-49. In writing, she did a great job on her homework and correctly answered 10/14 improving the sentence questions. We reviewed dangling and misplaced modifiers and I assigned a chapter on it. She has a strong foundation in grammar, so I just want her to continue to become more familiar with the SAT questions.
