Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

Anaheim, CA SAT Writing and Language tutoring
The student and I began our session by examining Geometry concepts fundamental to the SAT. We looked at triangles - how triangles show us the sum of the angles in any polygon, angle/side relationships in triangles, what side lengths constitute a viable triangle, and the external angle theorem. We then moved on to right triangles. We examined and applied the Pythagorean Theorem and special right triangles with sides in a ratio of 3-4-5 or 5-12-13 or with angles in a ratio of 45-45-90 or 30-60-90. I have assigned a math practice section (pages 50-53) for this week. In critical reading, we looked at the three types of passage: analysis, argument, and narrative. We discussed the purpose and the central idea of each. She then read a complex Physics analysis. Contemplating these root concepts helped her to answer correctly 5/6 questions with minimal rereading. I'd like her to keep the types, purposes, and central ideas of passages in mind as she completes the critical reading section on pages 43-49. In writing, she did a great job on her homework and correctly answered 10/14 improving the sentence questions. We reviewed dangling and misplaced modifiers and I assigned a chapter on it. She has a strong foundation in grammar, so I just want her to continue to become more familiar with the SAT questions.

We began by covering practice critical reading. She did a practice test and scored very well. Her vocabulary has improved and she understands more strategy of how to choose answer choices. Next we read sample essays together. We went over what distinguishes an essay with a top score of 6 from an essay with a low score of 1. Lastly we worked on SAT math. We did overall practice sets to give her practice like she would have on the SAT. She scored very well and understood the concepts. She seems very prepared for the SAT.

The student and I went through some of the math problems she had struggled most to complete over the break. We looked at factoring, logarithms, and trig. I asked her to send me CR and Math diagnostics before next time.

The student did very well today! I reviewed the work she had done for homework, and we identified a need to review some math concepts. We spent the session today working on concepts with which she felt she needed more help. We focused on questions on circles, triangles, polygons, etc. and some functions. A problem we've run into is vocabulary, so I sent her the link to work on flashcards through the test prep website. They're a great resource because they'll often define all the answer choices. Working on the flashcards once a day should improve her familiarity with common SAT words. For next time, I've assigned another full-length test. I've requested that she grade it at home. We will review any errors she has made and personalize her learning plan from those results.
