Today I reviewed the student's essay, and she started re-writing it. She worked on the recognition and use of adjectives in the essay as well as other important grammatical mechanics. She is currently working on tense and subject verb agreement, as well as comma placement and diction selection. We also worked on 3 pages of adjective workbook sentences. She will be writing a paragraph on "sensory" writing for next week and how to properly use touch, smell, taste, hear, and see senses in writing.

Today the student and I continued working on revising her paper on Begum's autobiography. We discussed the texts she had read in class that might be relevant to her analysis and how to incorporate those ideas and quotes into her paper. We also talked about how to refute the claims of authors with whom she disagreed in her analysis. The student's current draft includes many sentences that seem not to be fully developed in which she could state facts more simply and incorporate more analysis. This is particularly true in the section describing the value of a text written by a woman. We focused a significant amount of time to revising her thesis statement, which previously did not address the second question she will be examining in her analysis. Before turning in her paper, she is going to reread the text that represents an opposing view and come up with arguments about what the author of this text is failing to consider. She's also going to further develop her ideas about the value of reading about a "lived experience,"ù incorporating quotes ideas from Zaman's analysis.

I provided the student with a short story--"A Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin--and she read it during our session, underlining unfamiliar words. Afterwards, she looked up the words in the dictionary, and we discussed their meaning in the context of the story. In the process, we also ended up talking about other things related to the story, such as similes and metaphors, the historical and cultural context of the story, the author's life, and why the author used certain imagery. In total, we looked up 30 words. I assigned the student homework: she needs to make flashcards with the first 15 words and use them in sentences. I also gave her two handouts: one with reading comprehension questions and one with the steps she needs to take to write a successful essay. We will discuss both of those handouts next time, using "A Story of an Hour." She seemed interested in the work: she asked questions about the reading selection and was able to look up the words successfully in the dictionary. She also provided me with a writing sample; I am going to look over it and identify her problem areas. I recommended that she look for a handbook which will help her with grammar.

We continued to discuss the student's essay. As I requested last week, he added more material to the essay (we had cut a lot of repetitive sentences from the last draft, which brought the length down to a little over three pages). I looked over the new material, which was overall strong, both relevant and interesting. I also focused on the issue of tense errors and wrote out examples of how to use past tenses consistently. Last revisions and reviews of the draft took up the whole session--by the end of it, I think his essay was quite strong.
