Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week was all about loading, manipulating, and displaying Images. We learned how to have multiple images available and switch between them. We also learned how to use transparency to layer images. This week's homework is to create a planet background, and a spaceship with a transparent background. Then, as the user presses a key, the spaceship lands itself."
"In this session, we had to pick up with our last work. I showed the student one form of file reading that did not require pre-recording the number of records to be read. I introduced HashMaps as well. Using these tools, we started working on our text-based game. For now, we added only the functionality that is required for moving between rooms. I assigned for him to design a file with a basic game world, also thinking of new actions for us to add. He also is to write a small program using the HashMap class for storing data from a file."
"During today's session, I worked with Student S first and had her take a quiz on her understanding of Microsoft Word. I'm having her review the quiz and figure out what she missed and then take it again next week. She has been keeping up with her work for creating surveys for the field trips they go on, so that's good. Today, we ended the session by having her download GIMP and teaching her the basics of photo manipulation and editing. She found it interesting and exciting. The second half of the session, I met with the boys and reviewed with them the lesson from last Thursday. The review was good for them and they seemed to pick it up well. I talked about the basics of conducting research and what a resume was and the expectations for the resume project. Afterwards, we discussed the use of certain programs such as Boot Camp and Disk Utility as well as how to take screenshots. I finished with Student N by introducing him to Microsoft OneDrive and the differences between it and Google Drive. I ended the session with Student R by giving him a quick intro to GIMP."
"Today I briefly introduced the student to the Python coding language. We downloaded the PYTHON environment IDLE, and went over variable types, variable names, and began working on Python operators and functions."
"We worked on using the Internet to help answer questions and solve problems. She practiced using the Internet to navigate to her favorite sites and used a voice-recognition feature to search for items and websites."
"We covered pivot points and free points in linear algebra and how to develop the relationship between columns in a vector. The student wants to get a better understanding of the steps that are skipped in the notes from class. He has experience using similar concepts in other lines of study and is working to understand the generalized theory that is explained in linear algebra. We talked about how to think about the problem in a three dimensional space and how to expand that thinking into an infinite dimensional space."
