Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was my first tutoring session with the student. He is a bright and affable young man, and I enjoyed working with him. We mainly focused on math, covering Venn diagrams/reasoning with sets, prime numbers and perpendicular lines, among other topics. However, we also did a little bit of writing and reading work, focusing on subject/verb agreement, word choice, and guessing the meanings of words in context. He is already conceptually strong."
"This session we started to review a math practice test that I sent to the student. We went over the problems and looked at different ways to approach and solve each one -- very numerical/mathematical ways to very pragmatic/real-world ways. We discussed various techniques that could be used including working from the top-down in a problem (figuring out what the last step would be to get the solution, then figuring out the step to get to that last step, then figuring out the step to get to that step, etc.) and the converse technique of working (more or less blindly) forward with whatever step we could see the test-makers laid out for us, even if we weren't sure where that step would lead next. We also looked at a few practical ways to double check answers and reviewed a few concepts like annual interest rates, equations for circles in the coordinate plane, etc."
"Completed practice test 1. The student has already shown tremendous improvement in terms of her score. She is a fast learner and I'm very impressed with how she immediately applies concepts we discuss in the sessions to solve homework questions. She has very few weaknesses and always excels in the easy/medium questions. Since she is so accurate and consistent, I think it's only a matter of time before she gets a handle on the hardest math and critical reading questions. She is ambitious and eager to learn, so it's a pleasure working with her."
