We went over Chapter 33 in preparation for the student's test tomorrow. He did remember a lot of what they had done in class. In particular, his teacher had a very clever story about a bar fight to explain WWI, which I thought was a fantastic way to remember it. I suggested that he make a study tool by putting the story side-by-side with the historical facts.

Today was a final review for a double test on Late Imperialism and High European Society (1850-1913). As such we went in depth into the motives for European Imperialism, looked at the British in India as a microcosm of imperialism, and studied Japan as the antithesis to the fate of non-European societies. Then we looked at Europe in the late nineteenth century, with a focus on France and Germany's increasing rivalry.

The student and I spent our first session reviewing what he knows about the AP exam, how the exam is broken up, and how it's graded. We also talked about notecards and different strategies for using notecards to study. For instance, we talked about grouping notecards thematically, or imagining essay questions and then finding those terms that would make an essay stronger. Then, we turned to reviewing the earliest era on the exam. We reviewed key terms and concepts connected to the Neolithic Revolution and the River Valley Civilizations. He had definitely heard a lot of these terms before, and it seemed like our brief refresher helped drive home both the terms and their broader themes. It was a good first session! I told him that I'd have practice multiple choice questions for him on this material as well as on the Classical Era for next time. That way, we can review content and practice strategies for answering multiple-choice questions.

The student and I took advantage of this session to get caught up on her chapter-by-chapter study guides, also known in her circles as key questions and IDs. We worked diligently and quickly. As we hadn't had a session in two weeks and she has a quiz next week on chapters we've not yet gotten to, I really wanted to move quickly. She, as always, did a great job working with me to accomplish our goals. She showed me a couple grades in the course from recent quizzes and essays, and I'm happy to report that she has a near perfect score in the class as spring break approaches.

In this session, we discussed the causes and events leading up to World War II. The chapter that we were focusing on started with the Great Depression. She seemed to understand a lot more when I explained that the causes for the crash were less important than the impact it had, particularly decreased worldwide production and trade and skyrocketing unemployment. While discussing Europe's appeasement of Hitler's Germany, she made some insightful comments regarding it. Finally, after going through the events of WWII, we discussed her research project a bit more, and I helped her get a good start on an online discussion that she needed to complete.
