Since it was such a nice day, the student and I went out into the backyard and had an alphabet scavenger hunt. I hid A-I all around the yard, and he had to find them in order. This helped him understand letters individually as well as in sequence. I also had him find specific letters out of order. Then I taught him Jj and Kk; he was very confused by Jj vs. Ii, but I'm hoping that will become a non-issue over time. Finally, we used flashcards that his mom bought to test his phonetic abilities - I would say a sound and he would find the letter that matched the sound. He had a harder time with this exercise, but we'll continue to work on it.

I also found out yesterday that he is going on to the next grade, but he will continue tutoring sessions throughout the summer.

The student practiced her fluency by reading three different passages for one minute. She graphed all three of her scores for how many words she can read correctly in one minute. We then read from a chapter book that we have been reading. We read about a chapter. She practiced word attack skills, in order to sound out words that she was unsure of. I have seen a lot of progress in her expression while reading. We ended the session with practicing multiplication facts. We discussed strategies for quickly figuring out the product if she did not have it memorized.
