Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered an assignment with a page full of questions on graphing functions and finding asymptotes/holes. I verified his answers and the steps he used to get to those answers by sketching the graphs and then entering them on a graphing app. In the last 30 minutes I reviewed scatter plots and assigning a best fit line using a plotting tool in Excel"
"A good session focusing more on the domain and range of complex equations. We went over ability to find solutions to word problems that deal with volume, flow rate and equivalency of ratios between base and height. We also reviewed how to use horizontal and vertical asymptotes to graph normally irregular functions."
"We reviewed what we went over regarding parabolas, quizzing her on knowledge, concepts, and equations. We moved into functions and talking about how to work with them. I taught her how to do p's and q's quicker, and what certain givens from problems represent in terms of solving the problem. We also went over the max area equation again."
"We briefly went over how to graph a piecemeal function, then moved ahead in the chapter (ahead of the class) to cover operations of functions, such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing entire functions. We went through the entire chapter and, since the student seemed to have a good grasp of how to do the problems, we went ahead and worked on her upcoming two homework assignments. We worked through upcoming homework problems until the end of the session, at which point she was almost two full homework assignments ahead of where she started."
"We conducted a review of sections 1.1-1.3 which were on the first test. There wasn't sufficient time to go over all the material, but the student showed clear improvement and quickly recalled the things that he had forgotten over the break. Our next session is scheduled for next Saturday."
"In my most recent session with the two students, I split my time between the two equally. With student one, we worked primarily on pre-calculus and solving a variety of equations, such as inequalities and working with polynomials. With student two, we worked on empirical and molecular formulas of chemical compounds, and the difference between the two. She said that after I took her through how they are discovered, she seemed much more knowledgeable in her ability to obtain the correct answer."
"Went over test review for polynomial and rational functions Graphing, solving for intercepts, finding the vertex, axis of symmetry, number of rational zeros and graph behavior using concepts from the equation."
"Tonight's session centered on imaginary numbers. We practiced simplifying expressions using complex conjugates, and emphasized standard form. We also practiced some problems determining if a quadratic function has real roots, and what imaginary solutions mean graphically. We ended the session by generalizing a standard form of quadratic function in order to summarize cases that would lead to real or imaginary roots."
"The student and I worked on the chapter review for two variable equations, solving a two variable equation for one/other variable, solving for a variable given a value for a second variable, and applications of solving systems of two equations."
"For this session, we focused on calculating arc lengths and areas of sectors from the radius of a circle and its central angle. We reinforced some of these concepts with some homework problems. We then focused on conversion from radians to degrees (and vice versa) using a simple formula. She shows quite a command in understanding the material."
"The student and I worked on the rest of her review packet for the test since she didn't have to take it until tomorrow and I wanted to be sure she knew the material. She has new material to go over dealing with degrees and radians as well as degrees/minutes/ seconds. I think she will be in good shape for the test, and she has the answer sheet with some worked out solutions to the review to look back on and make sure any remaining parts are correct."
"The student and I worked on his homework in preparation for his test on Monday. We worked on graphing algebraic fractions (asymptotes, end behavior, holes, domain, etc.) He did a good job!!"
