Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we had a great session. The student asked me to translate about 20 sentences into Chinese. He tried to translate them himself first to me, and let me correct him if I need to. This went very well. He is making a lot of progress by studying after classes. He was able to translate most of the sentences to a point that I can understand him."
"Student practiced food vocabulary that is relevant to ordering in a Chinese restaurant. She role-played ordering food and beverages for herself and her family members. We also played a memory card game to review color vocabulary. She will make a restaurant menu as homework."
"First I helped the student with a math assignment involving graphing points on the coordinate plane. Then I spent the rest of the session helping him memorize a monologue for his English class. I helped him learn it line by line, then had him recite the whole thing for me a couple of times."
"Student A and I played the counting game by rolling dice and counting the dots out loud. She and I used a yoga ball to review the cardinal directions along with the words for "front," "back," "up," and "down." I also taught her the chorus of a famous Mandarin song called "Friends." Student B and I ran through his routine reviewing words for "fly," "practice," "wings," "eat," and "full.""
"The student and I spent time working on a creative dialogue. The dialogue was about finding an apartment and was meant to be an interview style transcript. One student was being interviewed by three others about an apartment that they needed. After that, we worked on some articles about the school systems in Germany. Since I have started working with him, I have had him practice his reading/speaking skills by having him read out loud. I also read some passages out loud to him as well as we go along so that he can hear words the way they should sound. I have noticed a significant improvement in his speaking ability since we have started working together. Keep up the good work!"
"The student has a speaking PALS test on Monday, so we spent most of our time going over the information he'll need for that test. After setting up a rubric for him to follow/ memorize, I'm confident he'll do fine. We also looked over some PALS speaking prompts he'll have to test on at the end of the month for a final exam for the class. After that, there's a written portion of the final, so we'll be focusing on that piece next session."
