Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I spent the time reviewing math concepts with the student, particularly ratios and averages. We also talked a little about vocabulary."
"This session introduced new topics: percents, compound, and simple interest. Walked student through the basics of percents--identifying it as a fraction with a denominator of 100; explained (briefly) why using fractions with a denominator of 100 is useful. We spent about 35 minutes practicing percent to fraction conversions, and vice-versa. Along the way, noticed some areas where the student needed some additional practice, including rounding numbers to the nearest place value, long-hand division, and converting fractions to decimals. We spent time reviewing these concepts. Student grasps concepts quickly--impressively so. Her confidence has soared."
"This was the first session that I sat down and taught content to the student. I had previously assigned him the task of writing out note cards of the exam vocabulary list in the review book. We carefully went over how to make his study cards. He did extremely well on the math."
"Last time, we went over strategies for reading, and this time, we looked at math. While she is good at math, she hasn't dealt with this material in at least 2 years. She really needs to take more timed practice sections. We will also continue to work on math in future sessions."
"We covered some of the student's classwork and homework and went through each process for each question. We also covered piecewise functions and graphing of piecewise functions. We will have another session on Monday, and then another one the following Thursday (instead of Friday) in order to help him prepare for the actual exam that he has on Friday. He will have a practice exam which we will go over together to help him prepare."
"We did a broad review for the state assessment test. The student was eager for understanding. We covered similar triangles, properties of parallelograms, ratios of similar shapes, transformations, solving trig equations of right triangles, and the area of a sector. The student struggles with explaining proofs that require an understanding of properties. I recommended strong study session with no cell phone and no TV for the next two days. I am pretty sure that the student will improve if he studies correctly. I also gave him a few tips for the exam."
