Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At the beginning of today's session, the student did an essay under timed conditions. Once he completed it, we reviewed the essay together. Following our essay review, we moved on to a timed critical reading section, on which he did well in both the sentence completions and passage-based reading. We finished today by working through part of a writing section. He appears to have great facility with the questions in this section."
"The student has made great progress expanding her vocabulary, as she has continued to read "Frankenstein." She is almost finished with it. Today, I quizzed her on additional SAT vocabulary. We switched gears in the lesson to focus on comprehension of passages. She did well on the practice quizzes online. I've asked her to complete math, critical reading, and essay sections of Test 5 over the coming week."
"First, we covered circuits and capacitance. Specifically, we covered Ohm's law, Joule heating and power, series and parallel circuits, combination circuits, and resistance-capacitance circuits. Then, we covered some topics in modern physics. Specifically, we covered the definition of the quantum (photons, the charge on electron, etc.), the relationship between frequency, wavelength, and c, the relationship between frequency and the energy of a photon, Planck's constant, the electromagnetic spectrum, the photoelectric effect, Bohr's model of the atom, electron excitation and relaxation, emission spectra, the Rutherford scattering experiment and the overthrow of the Plum Pudding model of the atom, the wavelength of matter and the momentum of light, and radioactive decay (alpha, beta, and gamma). For extra practice, I asked the student to try the review questions and exam practice questions I created for the topics we covered."
"In today's session we worked through another practice test. I let the student do 15 problems on her own, and then we looked over them together and figured out anything she had missed. Then we worked through twenty problems together, discussing strategies for approaching the problems. I let her do the last fifteen on her own again. She did well today. We still need to work more on her grasp of the spatial and graphical problems in terms of finding the fastest way to the solution, but we can continue that next session."
"The student and I worked on the English and reading sections of the ACT. First, I gave her an overview of high yield topics for the English section including punctuation and possessive pronouns. Then, she completed several passages; after each passage, we discussed her responses together. Next, she finished two passages from the reading section. We went over any incorrect responses and discussed completing passages within the allotted time."
"We went over the student's workbook on the SAT Chemistry test. We specifically went over the chapter on organic chemistry, going over nomenclature, functional groups, and various organic chemistry reactions. We also went over some general tips for test-taking."
"The student and I met for a session of SAT tutoring. We spent most of the session focusing on math. We practiced working with circles and functions. We also did work on grammar and on reading. He did well on grammar, getting about half of the questions correct. We will have to devote more time to the reading section in future sessions."
"The student and I went over math problems, vocabulary, and essay writing. Her math skills are great. Her essay was fantastic- I would rate it a 12. Her vocabulary is the main subject she can improve on, and I am confident she will by her exam date."
"We started by going over the structure and timing of the SAT. Then, we covered general testing strategies for the test. After that, we dove right into math practice. After attempting a few challenging problems, we decided to revert to basic review. We were able to get through several important arithmetic concepts, including dealing with negative numbers. We ended by making a study plan for the student that involves practice problems and vocab work."
"The student and I practiced a full 35-minute reading section. We first tried a strategy in which she focused on 3 out of 4 passages and tried to answer as many questions as she could. Her overall score using this strategy was 17. We then discussed another strategy for timing. This seemed to help her complete the section more efficiently."
"The student worked on the math and science sections this time. She did extremely well and only missed a few problems. I will start putting her on a stricter time schedule from here on."
"We started the session with a timed Science section. We saw improvement in her graph and chart reading skills from our last meeting. We then went over the English section, paying particular attention to grammar concepts that come up often."
