Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's' lesson was divided into two parts. One hour was dedicated to reviewing grammar concepts since the student mentioned last time that she would like to expand on those and acquire more practice. We went over the direct and indirect object. I explained to the student that, in addition to a subject, most sentences have an object that directly receives the action of the verb. The direct object can be easily identified as the answer to the questions "whom" or "what" about what the subject is doing. After my explanation and after looking at some sample sentences, she was able to complete sentences using the appropriate direct object pronouns such as (me, te, lo, la). Upon the completion of that activity, we moved on to the preterit of regular verbs. I explained to the student that Spanish has two simple past tenses: the preterite and the imperfect. We went over how the preterite of verbs is form depending on how the verb ends (ar-er-ir). The student was able to form simple sentences using the subject pronouns (el, ella, nosotros) and the past tense of different verbs in Spanish. After going over the grammatical concepts, she and I dedicated another hour to practice her communication skills in Spanish. This is the time where she had the opportunity to practice her Spanish by learning new vocabulary words, learning their correct pronunciation, spelling and applying these new vocabulary terms in sentences. Today we reviewed vocabulary related to Halloween since she considers it interesting to learn about all kinds of vocabulary themes. She was able to describe every picture that illustrated each vocabulary word. She was able to talk about their size, their color and their shape in Spanish."
"I gave the student a practice test. We then went over it, and he understood the mistakes he made. I gave him test-taking strategies. His comprehension of the material is good."
"We developed a lesson plan to increase the student's conversational proficiency in Spanish by dividing lessons into real-world vocabulary topics. We also discussed phonetics and key verbs."
