Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on revising her final draft of the Berlin Wall paper. The student made huge improvements. She had great logic and flow in her intro paragraph."
"The student and I had a great English session reviewing a paper that he will be turning in for his English class next week. He has done a fantastic job honing his writing and analysis skills on this assignment. His teacher had reviewed this paper and remarked that it was a very good first draft! He and I continued to work on strengthening the paper and by the end of the session, he was very close to a final draft. He is definitely taking ownership of the concepts we are talking about together, and is doing a great job applying the concepts we discuss to his own writing. As a result, his relationship to his writing is becoming much stronger and he is now constantly reading his writing with an eye to revisions. It will be important to keep practicing and solidifying the skills that he is learning. He has made great strides and seems rightly proud of his progress."
"The student and I spent our entire session working on his speech for communications, which was a 5-8 minute presentation that taught the audience a procedure. He wrote the introductory and conclusion paragraphs and sketched out the other material. He also practiced the draft of the speech and prepared his visual aids for the presentation on Friday, and I expect that it will go well. He has a strong presentation style and appears to be comfortable with the nature of his content."
"Today the student and I worked on vocabulary words the student needs to learn in order to take his test. In order to practice, the student and I created a story using these 16 vocabulary words in order to help him practice the spelling, learn their definition, and how to use them correctly in a sentence. The student ended our session feeling confident about all vocabulary terms."
"Today the student and I worked together to construct a compare/contrast essay on Jackie Robinson's and Satchel Paige's journeys to fame. We had already taken notes and constructed a rough thesis, so the student's homework for this week was to flesh out his body paragraphs and find evidence to support his claims. He completed this task prior to our session, and during the session we focused on creating a strong thesis, making sure information was placed in the right paragraphs, and providing enough evidence to support each claim. We also covered transitioning between paragraphs, as well as using compare/contrast transition words. His assignment for this week is to write his introduction and conclusion paragraphs and to edit the third body paragraph. Overall, our session was very successful."
"Today the student began the vocabulary series for academic vocabulary. The purpose of this is to enhance her understanding of reading that she will have across all her classes. She completed a four-page activity using the first ten words. She began with the ability to define two of them correctly, and ended with the ability to define seven of them correctly. I will create a vocab quiz for our next session, and she should complete Lesson 2 and make flashcards of the words (20 total). We then read over the chapter that we had reviewed last week, and used the notes to answer comprehension questions. We then read more of chapter 7, making notes of key information on her iPad reading device. We also started reading the book she had chosen for IR, which, while well below her reading level, should give her the chance to practice annotating."
