Algebra Tutoring review by Crystal in Chesterton, IN
The student and I worked on a review packet for her unit 1 exam which covered word problems as well as determining whether a function was always true, sometimes true, never true. She struggled most with setting up the word problems, so we did a trial and error method where I let her talk through the problem and then had her go back to see if her answer made sense. This actually proved to be good for her because she was able to see where she went wrong and what she needed to fix versus me telling her what to fix.

Algebra Tutoring review by Vincent in Chesterton, IN
Today we continued to work with inequalities, going through the types of problems that he would see on his homework. At the start of the session, the student reported to me that he was feeling a lot more confident with the subject and that he retook a test in his class which he saw improvement on. At the start, he struggled with remembering to transfer negatives from one side of the equation to the other, but he quickly caught his mistakes and completed most of the work without asking for my help. I left him with a practice sheet for inequalities to complete before our next session. He has shown marked improvement and confidence with the material he has learned thus far in class.

The student and I covered special square roots, special exponents, slopes, x&y intercepts, and long processes of order of operation. He needs more practice with order of operations, especially with the negative signs.

Algebra Tutoring review by Rachael in Chesterton, IN
I prepared a second packet, entitled Working with Integers, which involved operations with positive and negative integers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). To help conceptualize these complex ideas, we relied on number lines and real-life examples, such as negative temperatures or bank balances. The student excelled at this review. I left him with mixed practice to complete before our next meeting on Wednesday. From what I saw during this session, I have decided to cover absolute value, inequalities, and basic equations during our next session. He is making bounds in terms of his math ability, and I'm very happy to be working with him.

Algebra Tutoring review by Sara in Chesterton, IN
The student and I had a good session. I was able to get him to concentrate well today. Knowing that he would have a break soon was a big motivating factor for him. He started with finishing his science lab homework and he had full understanding of the questions and answers. Following science, he did his math homework. After reviewing the difference between commutative and associative properties, he was able to do his work easily. One of the answers was distributive property, which he hasn't learned yet, so I gave him a brief explanation of what it was. The reverse side of the page was review from last time-simplifying expressions which he remembered how to do.

Algebra Tutoring review by Ethan in Chesterton, IN
Today we continued through a practice test. We covered probability, graphs, and started work on equations. He blitzed through probability, and was picking it up quickly. He does well at extracting equations from word problems! Next time we will work on the methods surrounding solving for x.
