Albuquerque Latin Tutoring FAQ

Whether you're a beginner or someone who already has a background in Latin, Varsity Tutors can connect you or your student with Albuquerque Latin tutoring that can have a positive impact on your language learning experience. Learning any new language can be challenging, but you don't have to do it on your own. Studying with an Albuquerque Latin tutor can be an excellent way to practice with a fluent speaker and could boost your language skills in a shorter time than studying on your own.

How can an Albuquerque Latin tutor near me help me work towards fluency?

The Latin language is where Romance languages such as Portuguese, French, Spanish, and Romanian originated from. It's considered a "dead" language, which is a language that no longer represents the spoken language of any community, but it's still very useful if you're working in the medical field, doing scientific research, working as a lawyer, or studying theology. It can also be useful when you're learning the modern Romance languages.

If you're having a difficult time making sense of the different aspects of Latin, working with Albuquerque Latin tutors might just be the solution that can help you finally make sense of topics you're struggling to understand. You will study in a one-on-one academic setting where you'll receive the full attention of your teacher. Whether you have questions about grammar, gendered nouns, or verb conjugation, you can ask your instructor directly and get immediate answers. You don't have to wait for your turn to ask or clarify any points since there are no other students to accommodate.

Another advantage you get with Albuquerque Latin tutoring is that you can study using a customized study plan that's based on the learning gaps you need to fill. This means you don't have to follow a strict curriculum like what happens in a classroom setup. You can skip topics you already know and focus on the ones you need to improve on. For example, if you already have good knowledge about nouns and their gender but need to work on inflection (endings of Latin words that enable us to understand the meaning of a sentence), you can work with your instructor on exercises that focus on inflections. With one-on-one instruction, you can put your effort where it can have the most impact.

Having access to a qualified and experienced Albuquerque Latin tutor can also help you discover your natural learning style and leverage that when studying the language. Your private teacher can assess how you learn concepts naturally during your first few sessions and then decide which teaching methods to use that will match your learning style. If you're an auditory learner, for example, your instructor can ask you to listen to audio recordings of vocabulary words and then ask you to use them during a speaking exercise in your lesson. This can be a more effective way for you to remember new words rather than reading and memorizing them on a textbook.

As with any foreign language, practicing with a fluent speaker is important if you want to boost your language skills. That's because by listening to a fluent speaker, you can pick up grammar nuances and learn how to use different sentence patterns or expressions in a natural way. During your one-on-one lessons with Albuquerque Latin tutors, you or your student have the opportunity to practice what you've learned without worrying about taking time away from other students.

How can I fit time with Albuquerque Latin tutors into my schedule?

With private instruction, you can have a more flexible way to approach your language studies. We can help you find a private teacher who is not only patient and knowledgeable but also matches your scheduling requirements. Now you can pursue studying Latin while still being able to fulfill your other work and personal commitments.

Albuquerque Latin tutoring is designed as something you can attend either online or in person. For online lessons, you can choose which time you want to study and where you want to set up your study area. As long as you have access to a reliable internet connection, you can attend your lessons. You'll meet your teacher on our proprietary Live Learning Platform where you'll communicate using video chat. There is also a virtual whiteboard that your teacher can use when writing important points or reminders about the Latin language such as pronunciation, adjective agreement with a noun's gender and number, and other topics like common phrases or the history of Latin. Studying online makes it possible for you to gain the language skills you want without leaving your home or disrupting your daily routine.

If you prefer to study face-to-face with your private instructor, you can opt for the in-person lessons. This is a flexible option since you are able to choose the time and location where you want to study. Your instructor can meet you at home, at a nearby coffee shop in your area, or at public libraries such as the Tony Hillerman Library or the Ernie Pyle Library. No matter which type of lesson you choose, you still get the convenience of flexible, private instruction.

There are some language learners who combine private instruction with online courses in order to fully experience the unique benefits of each lesson type. You should also know that we offer online courses that allow you to study with other students who are also eager to learn and improve their skills in Latin. The courses are offered at different times throughout the day, and you have several sections you can choose from. New sections start monthly, so there's never a bad time to enroll and start learning.

Latin Tutoring review by Amelia in Albuquerque, NM
This lesson, we finished up with the passive voice, reviewing forms and the ablative constructions that typically appear in conjunction with passives. Much of the practice we completed focused on translation. As you continue on your own, you will most likely want to continue filling in verb charts and synopses to solidify your grasp of the forms, as well as practicing with the exercises at the back of the book.

Latin Tutoring review by Katharine in Albuquerque, NM
The student's mother emailed me the PDF of the workbook for her class, so I was able to help her get a head start on it for her classes. It covered most of the concepts that she had already learned about, including subject-verb agreement and the different ways to translate verbs from English to Latin. We got through all of chapter 1 and most of chapter 2. The exercises I skipped were also very simple, and she should have no trouble completing them on her own.

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Albuquerque, NM
This week, I worked first with Student I, reviewing the vocabulary from lesson 3, along with lessons 1 and 3, and working on learning the verb paradigm for the present tense. With Student S, we reviewed these same things, as well as working on translating particular verb forms from Latin and conjugating different verbs according to the same paradigm for the present tense. This week, Student K was working on the future tense, so in going through the exercises for homework, he did a lot of repetition of how to conjugate verbs in the future in Latin, and then got in some practice translating given forms from the future into English, followed by verbs of the present, future, and imperfect tenses all intermingled. By the end, he was doing very well at recognizing the differences.

Latin Tutoring review by Anna in Albuquerque, NM
The student is learning perfect and imperfect tenses in his Latin class. We began with a review of verb endings in the present tense and how to identify verbs based on person and number endings. Then we looked at the cartoon translations at the beginning of Chapter 6. I translated those sentences into English and asked him if he could tell the difference between how the verbs were translated (some were imperfect and some were perfect) and he was able to see the difference between how imperfect and perfect tense verbs are translated into English. Then we looked at the formation of the Latin verbs and how to tell when Latin verbs were perfect or imperfect. At the end of the session I gave him a basic rule ("a verb with -ba in it is imperfect, and a verb with -vi in it is perfect") to help get him through the next week of class. He said that this rule should be helpful.

Latin Tutoring review by Ralston in Albuquerque, NM
I reviewed the student's Latin quiz on relative pronouns and focused on how to recognize which pronoun form should be used in the translation from English to Latin. I also reviewed a passage he translated for me during the week. He is still doing much guessing when it comes to Latin translation and needs to follow the rules I set out before him.

Latin Tutoring review by Amy in Albuquerque, NM
This session we continued to work on the perfect tense system, and looked at how time/ aspect translates. We practiced translating the perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect in context, in sentences pulled from classical texts. The student was struggling to remember the endings for the tenses in the perfect system, so I asked him memorize them for our next session. We continued to discuss translation and tense memorization strategies (e.g. learning the relationship between the conjugation of sum and the pluperfect/ future perfect tenses). He has done very well on all of his recent quizzes--over 100% with extra credit.
