How can a Phonics tutor help you?

If you notice that your child is having a difficult time learning phonics, you might be unsure about what to do to help them. You may have noticed them struggling with basics, such as hearing and making rhymes. Or maybe they understand remedial material, but have problems with advanced concepts, such as phoneme counting. You could help your child rise above their struggles and find success in their class with the help of their very own personal tutor. Varsity Tutors can connect you and your child with a professional phonics tutor in Albany County, NY, who could teach them how to study effectively.

Your child's tutor can create a study plan that focuses on their individual needs, and complements their educational goals. We'll find your child a hand-picked phonics tutor in Albany County, NY, who will love what they teach, which allows them to make their study sessions engaging. The tutor can try to help your child focus on just one subject, such as vowel digraphs, or cover everything they have learned in their course. Tutors could help your child by making use of practice exams, visual aids, and the use on mnemonics, to try to help your child remember certain subjects, such as how to find out how many syllables are in a word. Phonics is important to understand as your child begins to take more advanced courses, such as college vocabulary. Reading is also covered on the Regents exam, so preparing now could give your child an advantage later.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Albany County, NY Phonics tutoring
We went over the student's homework and discussed homonyms and Venn diagrams--subject, article, active verb and direct object. Her spelling improved this time. For critical thinking, we went over author's purpose, inference, mixed messages, possible solutions to problems, stigmas and connotations. We used a recent article about a young Indian woman that made the cover of the newspaper. Overall, she did pretty well with only a few unfamiliar words with a lengthy article; she figured out some of the words through context. I assigned her sentences with the three homonyms that confused her. Also, I asked her to pick a short passage and summarize it using the critical thinking concepts we discussed today. I provided a two-page article for her with the critical thinking terms. I asked her to bring a hard copy of the article she is summarizing. Next time we will use the study guide from the book her dad recently purchased for sharpening English and reading skills.

The student and I finished discussing 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.' She has a lot of great ideas about the author's intent. I really enjoyed talking with her about this. I tried to focus a bit more on the writing side of things this week, so I had her respond to some essay questions. We discussed the writing process and talked through several points. In the last 10-15 minutes, I talked with her about her own fiction writing, and we practiced creating plot narration through letters, texts, and emails.

Today, the student and I began with reading from his book about Babe Ruth and filling out his reading log. After we completed a chapter and a half, with him reading at a very fast and accurate pace, we moved on to worksheets on "r-controlled syllables". His grasp on the vocabulary and its spelling and pronunciation was excellent for this concept and he worked diligently. We concluded with a worksheet coming up with concepts that he could write reports on for his writing workshop at school. A great day with lots of work completed.

We continued to work on different spellings to make the long a and different meanings of words. The student practiced reading aloud from Spinning Storms and we went over comprehension questions. He did a good job and thought hard to find the best answers.

Today we went over the basics as they relate to the student's upcoming exam. Additionally, we reviewed two sample questions from a previous exam, with their corresponding articles. Between now and our next tutoring session, she is planning to respond to one of these questions. In advance of meeting she'll email me her response.

The student and I worked on sight words today. I brought flashcards to the session and taught her how to use her finger to say the word. She does well with short letter sounds and pictures. These flashcards did not have pictures on them. We also worked on letter sounds for vowels. For the next session, I would like to work on more number words.
