To pick up from last week, I wanted to test the student to see how much he had been able to retain. So, I have him a small quiz to determine what numbers were rational and which were not. We reviewed her previous tests and quizzes so that I could understand what she was struggling with the most. On most of the quizzes she seemed to be making simple mistakes that she noticed once she went back to review the content. However it seems like she was struggling most with plotting and reading distribution graphs. We reviewed information about histograms, box and whisker plots and how mean, median, and mode can represent the central tendencies of data. Once I explained the material, she was able to understand the graphing concept better, but she will still need constant practice. I assigned her a practice problem to complete before our next meeting. Overall it was a good session.

The student and I continued working on Compass practice problems. We talked a bit about factoring, and also about rules of exponents. We spent much of the time working on rules of exponents and simplifying exponential expressions. The rules of exponents were fairly unfamiliar for him, so we will continue to focus on rules of exponents in future sessions.

The student's math class has just been introduced to the graphs of quadratic functions. All they have done so far in class is graph them using a graphing calculator and then again by looking at the graph give the domain, range, and vertex. We worked some problems from his textbook that covered how to tell if an equation was quadratic, which way the parabola will open, and whether the vertex is a minimum or maximum. He also graphed a few by hand given the equation. He seemed to comprehend.
