How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

While summer should be a time where your child gets a break from school, it is important that they still get in some study practice. It is common for young students to lose academic skills during the summer if they do not take time to review class material. This is especially true in reading and math. Most students who do not study over the summer lose around two months of math skills. When this occurs, it takes up to six weeks for them to re-learn the material once the school year starts. This means that students who do not study during the summer are at risk at falling way behind their classmates who do study. If you are concerned about your child falling behind in their classes, it might be a good decision to connect them with a private tutor. Varsity Tutors' experienced educational directors are happy to help students in Albany connect with a qualified summer tutor who might help them pursue their goals.

One of the great ways to get your child to study during the summer is to make the subject material into a game. A skilled private tutor may make reading and math fun, which may help your child work to stay engaged. Their private tutor may also work with them on topics that they find interesting. This may make studying not seem like work, which may make it more likely that your child may study even though it is the summer. Studying during the summer may try to help your child is getting the most out of the skills they already have. To help your child realize their full potential, let us find your student a professional tutor in Albany, NY, today.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Albany, NY Summer tutoring
The student and I went over some of the reading comprehension questions from the ISEE book. He breezed through the lower level questions, and wanted an extra challenge, so we looked at some of the upper level segments. He did a fantastic job - these are high school level questions. Some of it was a little difficult, particularly a section of poetry. It required some outside knowledge of American history that older students would have been exposed to. It was interesting, because later in the session he mentioned offhand that he wasn't very good at poetry - a huge turn from when I first met him and he mentioned how much he loved poetry. He really benefits from positive reinforcement and notices when something isn't as easy for him. Confirming for him that he is a great reader and writer will make him feel that way and do better! Since the test questions were getting somewhat trying, we moved on to reading some articles. We read an article about Ultimate Frisbee, and I had him do some quick creative writing about what would happen if Mary Poppins and Bert were on a team. Then we identified some strong synonyms that would make the passage he wrote even stronger. For homework, he should read three articles in higher level magazines and do a creative response to each article - one poem, one short play, and one letter to someone else about the article. This will help develop his reading comprehension skills, and it will allow him to have some control about what is interesting and exciting.

The student is just starting a new online school, so we went through the orientation together to see how the system works. We also looked at upcoming deadlines and organized assignments and due dates into her planner and whiteboard calendar. She is very good at navigating on the computer and learned the system quickly. She should keep practicing organizing her assignments and deadlines to develop an organizational system that works best for her.

We worked on the Learning Portal, covering COMM 201, 202, 203, and 204. Additionally, we reviewed the COLL modules. In addition to learning the software, we covered the following key computer proficiency topics: - Desktop definition, - Browser tabs, - Browser windows, - Settings icon, and - Radio buttons / Check boxes. The student agreed to practice the COLL modules between now and Monday, taking notes for anything she'd like to review together. She is picking up the material very quickly. I have no doubt she'll successfully understand all the modules by her deadline.

The student and I continued to develop his college entrance essays. Two out of the three have been proofread and are almost completed. The third will be reviewed tomorrow. It is my plan to have all of them ready for submitting Wednesday. I feel as though he is developing an eye from proofreading which will help him greatly with his college pursuits.
