How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

If your child is planning on studying at a private school then they may need to take the Secondary School Admissions Test, or SSAT. This test is administered to students between the 3rd and 11th grade, and is used to help institutions decide admissions and placement. There are three different levels to the test, elementary, middle, and upper, which are selected depending on the test taker's grade level. If your student must take this test in order to get into the school of their choice, consider enrolling them in one-on-one lessons. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors are skilled at helping students in Albany connect with SSAT tutors.

Varsity Tutors is happy to assist you with finding an instructor for your child. Personalized SSAT instruction in Albany, NY, may allow your student to develop a rapport with their tutor to facilitate the learning process. This means that your student might be able to learn with someone who may develop custom-tailored lessons that suit their needs and preferred learning styles. Since the tutor may have a good understanding of your child's proficiency level, they may design lessons that spend more time focusing on especially difficult areas of the test, while skipping past material that your student already knows. For this reason, one-on-one SSAT tutoring lessons are one of the most efficient ways that your child may prepare for test day.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

Albany, NY SSAT tutoring
Today we started out by going over the student's homework (she had done a reading section). Because we had not spent much time on the readings last lesson, we started with those and practiced giving evidence for choices, and deciding between two answer choices by looking at their associated expected vocabulary. Next, we practiced some vocabulary words in context of the reading passages. Finally, we worked on math. We did more practice with solving equations by rearranging variables and distributing. This was difficult for her, but she did okay. I think we will continue to practice this to ensure she learns how to do it more fluidly. For homework, I asked her to do one more section and to continue to practice her vocabulary.

The student is making good progress. We worked on building vocabulary and examined word parts. He demonstrated his understanding by building his own sentences using the new words. We finished with a reading comprehension passage.

The student and I played vocabulary bingo, based off of the most recent vocabulary homework. We then did some more vocabulary exercises via alphabet flashcards, where he would have to spell out the word that I defined. This way, his spelling skills would be strengthened, as well. Once we completed that task, I went on to ask him five more vocab words in order for him to provide me with the definitions and to put the words into sentences. Once he completed those vocabulary tasks via bingo, flashcards, and the providing of definitions and sentences, I went on to provide him a practice SAT math section, where he would have the standard 30 minutes to complete 25 questions, without a calculator. While he worked on that, I graded his vocabulary homework and provided him with the commentary needed for him to improve upon the way he puts sentences together using the new words.

The student began the session with a matching quiz, matching words that we studied last week with their definitions. He found this quiz challenging, so we studied the words together. I asked him to review the words as homework before our next session. Next session, I will present him with the same quiz, but with the words rearranged. We went on to work on several reading comprehension problems, which he did well at. We concluded the session by working on synonyms and analogies, and I saw a marked improvement on these sections compared to the last session.

The student and I started our session by completing a timed verbal section. We tackled the section using the strategy we have discussed. She first answered all the questions she knew with about 95% accuracy. She then moved onto questions she found challenging with about 25% accuracy. She only answered those she felt she figured out or could confidently eliminate some of the answers. She left the remaining questions without answers. She finished with about 2 minutes remaining. Since she is in 5th grade and the Middle SSAT is targeted for 5th-7th graders, there were quite a few verbal questions she omitted (about 10). With this strategy, she was able to achieve a section score of 614. I emphasized that she did very well and should feel comfortable with having extra time at the end since I do not want her to go back and try to guess at omitted questions. She seems comfortable with her testing strategy. Of note, the timed reading score she completed last session was around 620. Both of these are significant improvements for her. I am working on developing her confidence for the exam since it is hard for a 5th grader to tolerate an exam where >25% of questions lie far outside her knowledge range.

The student and I began with discussing the Word document I emailed to her and her mom two days before our session where I described SSAT Middle Level essay tips and three practice options. We then discussed that there were three other parts to the exam other than the essay part: verbal, reading and math. I then asked her what her strengths and weaknesses were in her opinion, and she said that she really enjoyed reading but sometimes had trouble with reading comprehension skills. Her mother let me know that she is a solid A student in math, and believes that she would need to focus mostly on the verbal, reading and essay portions of the test. I assigned her the reading, verbal and math diagnostic #1 for her to take to develop a baseline for the student and the SSAT. She took the verbal diagnostic today and got a 55%. Since she has never taken the SSAT before, I told her that with increased familiarity with the SSAT format and practice with certain content and test taking skills and strategies, her scores and confidence will increase. We reviewed the 12/18 questions missed and as we progressed I asked her to keep a running list of the words/ vocabulary she did not recognize or understand, even if she got the question right, to build her familiarity and comfort level with complex words. She is already demonstrating a quick and solid understanding of test taking strategies, as well as the new or complex word meanings. We ended the session scheduling another online session for tomorrow night.
