How can a Science tutor help you?

Whether your student is struggling to keep up in class, wants to get ahead, or is preparing for the Regents exam, Varsity Tutor's educational directors may help them connect with science tutoring in Albany, NY. There's more to science than learning textbook facts. A good teacher should enable your student to explore it for themselves, discovering how things work and experimenting with forces, sound waves, and other concepts. Identifying cause and effect is important to learning science, and your child's tutor may help them along here and in understanding things like relativity, the water cycle, or the life cycle. If your student requires more targeted attention, Varsity Tutors is happy to try to help you find an independent science tutor in Albany.

Your child's tutor may quickly figure out their weakest areas. They may then customize each lesson to fit the student's needs, applying all relevant topics, tools, and materials. The time may be spent focusing on any area of confusion, rather than moving quickly through a lesson plan that does not match your child's specific challenges. Best of all, instruction may take place at a time and location of you or your child's choosing. Flexible tutors may travel to your home or a local library and schedule meetings on any day of the week, including weekends. A live learning platform lets your child's tutor work face-to-face with them online. This method may save time and still enable weaknesses to be addressed if an in-person meeting doesn't happen.

Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Albany, NY Science tutoring
In today's session we picked up where we left off with kinematic equations and continued along the same lines as our first session. We moved into discussing more complex situations involving projectile motion and in general, motion in a 2-D plane. Again we identified and exemplified the use of vectors in solving these problems, working through each component (x and y) separately based on the information we were given. We practiced a few particularly illuminating examples in his textbook, which made clear use of a variety of concepts and equations. In doing this, we discussed how to identify the relevant information in a problem, and how to interpret and attribute the correct values to each component of a physical concept. For example, acceleration on a projectile is only in the y direction due to the force of gravity since no other forces act on the object.

We had a very productive session prior to the brief holiday break. We covered electric circuits and the student demonstrated mastery of the subject. Further, she reported that she currently has an A in Physics, a significant improvement from prior to our sessions.

The student needed to review a previous test and her homework. The test covered the principles of acceleration and velocity and she had taken it before we began our sessions. We reviewed the test, paying special attention to the problems she got wrong. While reviewing it with her she very clearly understood the mistakes she made and proved she did in fact know the material, but had been unclear on the vocabulary and concepts. Next we reviewed her previous homework which she got all but one correct on, and the mistake she had made was very easily addressed. Next, we completed her homework for this week together and she very quickly and easily picked up the material which was resolving forces into x and y components. I left her with an extra practice work sheet that covered the same material which we will review the next session.

We started out by working on a problem that required using both kinematics, impulse, and momentum. We then transitioned to precalc, working on problems involving the unit circle and solving for sin, cos, tan, cot, csc, and sec.

This was my first meeting with the student. She and I focused on motion maps. We discussed the relationship between position, velocity and acceleration. Then we plotted multiple motion maps from various word problems and discussed strategies for identifying key points in these problems. She is very good at focusing herself and working diligently. She should continue to be open to new suggestions/strategies for her work as well as tangential, yet meaningful, pieces of information.
