Focused on homework support for math, vocabulary, and reading comprehension for history. For math we reviewed 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. The student was familiar with the general steps to the process and showed improvement over the course of the session. He was getting tripped up when it came to multiplying in the tens place and including regroupings in his final answer. We broke down the 4-steps written in his notebook to a more detailed procedure. For vocabulary and history we worked on general organization and study habits associated with reading comprehension. We looked for keywords in the assignment and practiced referencing them in the text. Along with this we practiced how to double- check an answer by citing evidence from the text.

Focused on the derivation for arithmetic and geometric sequences in detail, and then worked through her review worksheet using these formulas. We also reviewed her previous worksheet as a final review for her test retake tomorrow. I believe she feels confident with material for tomorrow and should then direct her focus towards exercising the formulas we derived today following the test regarding sequences.

Focusing on today's session was more difficult for the student. We covered operations with integers, equations with integers, mental math strategies, and factoring. Overall, she did well. I gave her a memory assignment for next time. I want her to be able to quickly compute the squares of the numbers from 1 to 15. I did "quiz" her over integer operations. She was able to answer 87% of the questions correctly. Next session, I plan to expand on her knowledge of exponents and begin working on exponent rules. :)

For about an hour of our session I helped the student complete his homework in pre-calc. He is still studying matrices and specifically is studying matrix inverses, on which his homework focused. The algorithm by which one solves for the inverse of a square matrix can be tedious and long, but he pulled through them and definitely, after practice, understood what was happening and why the process works in the first place, in the context of the definition of a matrix inverse. Following his pre-calc homework, for the remainder of our session we went through a practice PSAT Math section, 20 questions, formatted with an answer sheet, and all like the real deal. He answered all but a couple correctly and managed his time on the section well. I think, come the exam he will succeed, and I am confident of that. With more practice he can fine tune his skills, knowledge, and time management. Next week, besides his pre-calc, I will go through with him another full-length practice math PSAT.
