The student did well today. We did a speed drill, and then we played a game. If she got the problem right, she took one step forward. If she got it wrong, she took one step backward. We played twice. The second time, she had a time limit to answer.

The student did well with review of place value, rounding, and estimation. She needed some guidance with long division still, but I see improvement. Today, we worked with fractions and parts of whole numbers for example, one fourth of 12 or two-fifths of 20. After a few examples, she was able to successfully set up the problems and explain her reasoning to an answer. I helped justify her understanding by using mathematical equations as well as pictures/diagrams. This practice will lead us towards some in depth practice on how to simplify fractions as well as add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. I instructed her to complete Math and to look out for an email that will have detailed instructions on what we will do next.

The student did wonderfully during her first session! Our focus was on number sense: addition and subtraction with multiples of 100. She also did some work with manipulating money: considering how different combinations of coins might add up to a given dollar amount. She showed great creativity and thoughtfulness in developing stories to fit a number sentence.

The student did wonderfully yesterday. She continues to be an absolute pleasure to work with, and I love seeing her progress. We spent our session working with probabilities, both in her book and in practice. We played 20 games of rock-paper-scissors, recorded our results, and then measured the probabilities that ensued of each of us throwing rock, paper or scissors. She responded very well to this hands-on activity, and I will be trying to incorporate them more frequently. We also did a little bit more multiplication practice, as well as coordinate geometry. I have asked her to complete a short assignment in which she draws a picture and plots it on the grid we used for the previous activity.
