We then spent the majority of the session going through her first exam and, together, working to understand not only what the right answer was but how to get there. "I prepared 5 worksheets covering benzene reactions and 4 worksheets covering alcohol reactions that the student and I went over at length during our session. I left him with some benzene synthesis problems that he could work on his own time that will help prepare him for his next exam. We covered the oxidation/ reduction of alcohol functional groups as well as how to perform elimination reactions using acid and heat. We also went through various examples of how to add substituents to a benzene ring and to determine whether they are ortho/ para directing or meta directing. We covered the use of benzene sulfonation, which is completely reversible, to more accurately direct subsequent additions to the benzene ring. We also touched on the protection of amides/ amines by using ethyl acetate to protect this functional group during Friedel Crafts acylations."
