Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on finalizing the content of essay #3. This included development of ideas, giving those ideas structure in the form of paragraphs and writing a robust conclusion needed to meet the goals of the rubric. We were able to use essay #2 comments from his teaching assistant to understand what was getting stronger (content) and where he still had an issue (citation). His writing in essay #2 showed an substantial increased score vs. essay #1. We'll continue to refine the content and improve the accuracy of APA formatting for in-text citation and references. We are meeting the goals of consistently improving his writing from essay to essay, week to week and topic to topic!"
"This session, the student finished researching and outlining his response. This response will focus on women's basketball and the recent expansion in feminist programs offered and the community created. We researched women's basketball programs such as Junior Journalists and Beyond the Baseline which help mentor strong women. He wrote half of the essay and we edited this. The essay already inherently considers increased viewership and the game of basketball itself as reasons for this recent increase in awareness. Next session, he will finish the response, working further on relating programs to these causes and speculating about future programs."
"In today's session we began with a writing warm up of fictional stories. We then worked on spelling patterns ear and ar. We spent the rest of the session doing a creative writing exercise. The students both created a secret language and wrote stories using the secret language. They then switched and had to decode the stories which they seemed to really enjoy!"
"We worked on some math at the beginning and the end of the session today. We focused on multiplication of two digit numbers. Then we worked on writing a small three paragraph piece to work on the process of revising and editing, which seems to be his area of weakness."
"We worked on synonyms today. Specifically we reviewed adjectives that are used to describe characteristics and traits of people. For each of the traits we talked about, we also talked about the type of people that these traits describe."
"We worked on the arguments, as he didn't bring an outline, just a paper. He picked out an Atlantic article that he had read for school discussion, and is building a new outline with a thesis and arguments and evidence. He should have this on Thursday."
