Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we started by reviewing proportions again. He seemed to show a much better understanding of cross multiplication and didn't hesitate as much as last time. We worked through dividing the large numerator into smaller numbers that we are confident are divisible by 6. We struggled through this concept for a good half hour, but after repetitive sessions with different numbers, he started to show understanding of the material. I will continue to test him on this concept next session. He has a unit test on Wednesday with our next session on Tuesday. I asked him to complete a few questions from each section and make note of any hard concepts so we can go over them on Tuesday before his test."
"I think the first session with the student went fairly well. She wanted help with math in general, so we worked on making sense of her notes from that day. I think she will be able to do great in math as long as there's someone who can explain it so she can understand it better. I think we will be able to work on getting her to understand math and get her grade up."
"The student and I worked on a few graphing problems and the properties of inverse functions. I gave him one of my algebra books that I feel is better written than his. He can read it or practice problems from it to get more experience. The second student and I reviewed the algebra problems I gave her on Wednesday and worked on some tougher ones that involve the distributive property. She's starting to get an intuition with the algebraic manipulations. I'll start working on systems of equations soon and see if she'll understand them now. After that I showed her some aspects of using Excel."
"I worked with the student on the following concepts: solving multi-step equations with integers, fractions and decimals. We also previewed solving equations with the variable on both sides of equations. She informed me that her overall grade in algebra is currently 91%! We spent the remainder of session reviewing study skills and techniques in preparation for a science exam. I recommended that she create flashcards with the key terms and definitions, and to review them for 15 minutes at a time."
"We concentrated on solving increasingly complex algebra problems. We incorporated a math online game into the lesson."
"The student and I went over the topics that would be on his quiz on Friday. We went over the product rule, power rule, and exponents. We started off with his homework problems, and he did an excellent job answering the problems. I think he fully understood the rules on how to apply exponents, but sometimes he had a tendency to make mistakes and instead of multiplying exponents when doing the power rule he mistakenly added them, which is the product rule. So he just needs to be careful with those small mistakes and make sure he always checks the work after he is done with the problem. We also went into applying the rules in geometry problems like finding the surface area of a rectangular prism or volume of the cube. He was able to do the algebra part. We also worked on composite shapes and learned how to divide those shapes into recognizable figures. I thought he did a great job with those as we did more problems on it. Overall, I think he is ready for the quiz on Friday."
