Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The topic for the day was rates of change. We reviewed the equation to find the slope of line and went through how to identify the dependent and independent variables. He seemed to struggle initially with identifying which was the dependent and independent variables, and I gave him a tip that time is usually the independent variable because that is always constantly moving forward and cannot be affected. I told him it will not hold true forever (with more complicated problems), but it is a good assumption to make in these simpler problems. We left off the session with homework problems involving finding rates of change. He understood how to find rates of change between certain time periods very well."
"We went through his homework on reading graphs and plotting points on a coordinate grid. Although his speed could improve with plotting points, he could do them accurately, and, after doing several examples, his accuracy with reading graphs improved."
"Since she doesn't have any upcoming tests or quizzes and we've already covered the other topics from her class satisfactorily in our previous lessons, we worked on a new concept - determining what x is based on an algebraic equation. I taught her the most basic concepts of isolating the x, dividing out the coefficient, and finding what x is. We also went through her "daily problems" so she could get those out of the way and I could help her out with any of the problems that she had questions about. We talked about how to find the volume of a 3D shape and how to find the value of a whole when a question asks you to find a fraction of it."
"Today, we finished going over the student's past exams (simply talking about PEMDAS and the difference among natural, whole, integers, rational, real and irrational numbers) as well as worked extensively on word problems focused on solving for one or two variables. She is getting better with working on the word problems."
"We covered arithmetic sequences and briefly discussed equations of lines. The student had some trouble matching the equation to the sequences and some trouble finding which sequence corresponded to a certain value. He was able to grasp the content very well and I believe that he now has a very good understanding of it. We made some notes where we worked through example questions that he can look back at in the future."
"We went over material that was covered in the student's class on Friday. After he had an understanding of it, we moved onto content that will be covered next week in order to get him ahead. I left him with instructions for if he gets a study guide vs. problem set vs. old tests and homework to study for his final! I am looking forward to working with him again!"
