Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I met the student to help him complete the quizzes and work he had due that night. We reviewed slope/intercept form again, how to calculate slope, and how to calculate intercepts. He did show improvement in understanding the meaning of the algebraic functions."
"We covered switching in between point slope and slope intercept forms of lines. While doing this we got some practice multiplying and adding fractions together. I am going to create some practice problems for him to do before our next session."
"We met at the library and practiced a lot of questions regarding slope. This included being able to graph an equation when given a coordinate pair which intersects that line, being able to graph an equation when not given an extra coordinate pair (must use the x and yintercepts), being able to find the slope when given two sets of points, and, finally, being able to come up with an equation if given a graph of the line (working backwards using the slopeintercept formula). He remembered all of the tips we went over and really understood the reasoning behind why this math works. Again, he did really well.
We also covered arithmetic sequences for simple equations as well as word problems. We did lots of word problems."

"Student 1 and I met first and went through her review sheet for chemistry for her final. This took about an hour and we covered significant figures, ions, electron configuration, compounds, types of mixtures, and electromagnetism amongst other topics.
Student 2 and I then met to review for the second half of his final. He got a perfect score on a retest for his last test (hooray!) and thought the final was going well. He also said that his Algebra final was fairly easy."

"The student and I went over questions she had on her review which she wanted to cover. We did questions involving slope, x intercept and y intercept, including how to find them when given a table or a graph. We also solved equations and inequalities. We also worked on developing an equation when given a word problem. We agreed to do another session tomorrow since her exam is tomorrow and Thursday. I will find other practice problems to cover the topics that are on her review we covered tonight to reinforce the concepts. Then we will also go over anything additional she needs to cover to be prepared."
"With the semester coming to a close, the student had a bunch of review materials to cover. We spent our time on his least confident section, graphing lines. We focused on what the parts of an equation of a line (y=mx+b) mean and how to find and interpret them. We also spent a lot of time graphing the lines and determining how changes to the equation change the look of the line."
"Today was my last session with the student for the year. We briefly reviewed the Mandarin radicals (he finished making the flashcards last night) and then started working through his algebra final exam practice. We went through solving basic equations, mixture problems, and rate problems."
"The student discussed her experience taking the Algebra exam today. She explained that the test was teacherwritten and that she felt really good about it. She asked for some help with her IPC (intro to physics and chemistry) final exam review. We practiced determining the formulas for binary ionic compounds involving the bonding of metallic and nonmetallic elements. We also reviewed atomic vocabulary using flash cards. She will take the IPC final exam tomorrow. She has done tremendous this semester."
"The student and I continued our review for his upcoming final by going over a practice test for Chapter 6 on systems of equations. Though this material was covered most recently on the test he had just taken, there were a few key ideas that we had to work on. Foremost among these was the method of substitution. I think an area I will focus on in the next session will be training him to apply the most effective strategy for each system. On the plus side, his graphing has become a strong point of his, and he has an understanding of the elimination method of solving these systems."
"We worked on some more algebra today, which the problems get more complex. She's got the handle on how each technique is done. By the end of the session, she was definitely doing problems with more ease, which was nice to see."
"Today we went over slope intercept equation from a graph, and a graph from a slope intercept equation. We also covered developing an equation from a word problem and showing if they were proportional or not. He did well on all of the problems and showed that he understood the material."
"We worked on linear equations and how to properly translate word problems into mathematical sentences. Basic understanding of the vocabulary of terms was looked over as well as how to solve percentage word problems."
