I am 22 years old. I graduated from Sacramento State in the fall of 2015 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. While at Sacramento State, I took multiple calculus courses including differential equations. Also I coached high school volleyball for 3 years at my former high school in Elk Grove. I decided to start tutoring after graduating college so I could share my knowledge with many other students to help them succeed in school. Tutoring for me is comparable to engineering. I love both because I love to solve problems. I hope to teach students to be unafraid of solving problems as well. I tutor Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Trigonometry and Calculus. My favorite subject to tutor is Algebra 1. I like Algebra 1 because that is the beginning of solving equations and I believe that a solid understanding of Algebra 1 is very important for students. My tutoring style is patient and enthusiastic. I enjoy math and I want my students to enjoy it too! My teaching philosophy is you cannot build without tools. In math you need to add every tool to your toolbox that you can because math is always a cumulative subject. Outside of academia I enjoy being around friends and family. I also enjoy most outdoor activities such as running, yoga, hiking, biking, and rowing.

Even though my favorite subjects are in the sciences (Biology and Anatomy), I also like to help with basic skills like reading and math through the Algebra concepts. The anxiety of new grammar and the joy of mastering it are something of a universal with students. As a Journalism student and PR professional, the precision with which I was taught to write has imbued me with a keen sense of what constitutes not just good but great writing. Editing, proofreading, and revision are second nature to me as are the intricacies of English syntax and grammar.Helping others achieve confidence in their work, no matter the topic, is the goal of my tutoring. After four years of engineering school, one thing I've learned is that teaching is hard to do. Every student learns differently and for those of us who can't instantly understand advanced concepts and apply them in the real world often feel frustrated and left behind. In a way I still am one of the those students but I've found through hard work and some clever strategies that it is possible for anyone to be a successful student and a lifelong learner.I have spent many years working with other students to pass on the skills I've acquired so that they too may find success. I have worked extensively with grade school children in the areas of math and writing through my participation as an assistant teacher with the Visions 2000 Math & Reading Academy. For five summers I worked with far below and below basic students to get them back up to speed in time for the coming school year. Additionally, while attending USC I worked with inner-city children to pass on my engineering knowledge with the Iridescent Learning program. There I designed lesson plans that would explore the wonders of engineering and each lesson culminated in a hands of building challenge of my own design. With all this experience I hope to continue helping children achieve their goals by being patient and understanding of their individual needs. I truly believe that anyone can learn and hope to hear from you soon!As an engineer my math skills have been constantly stressed and my extensive coursework has taught me excellent ways to approach how we think about numbers in both the physical and imaginary space. When working with students my approach is to pinpoint what core concepts they are struggling with and then work to introduce new ways of thinking that will allow them to describe the concept in their own words. This method gives students a sturdy base of knowledge that can then be applied to a variety of practical uses and I feel it to be the most effective way of teaching.

I have been teaching for over 10 years and have loved every minute of it. I knew I wanted to be a teacher in the 5th grade. I enjoying helping students believe in their abilities and strengthening what they are weak in. Working through these weaknesses and getting them to believe in themselves and what they are capable of opens so many doors to them and makes anything they put their mind to possible in the future. I went to Sonoma State University for my BA in History and went on to Sacramento State for my credential and some graduate courses. I have since worked at an independent study charter school for the past 7.5 years and am now substituting for some of the local districts.I look forward to making a difference in more student's lives and helping the achieve the education they deserve!

I am a retired high school teacher. I have taught all levels (9-12 grade), and all aspects of English. No matter what I taught or when I taught it, I have always enjoyed the student-teacher connection more than any other part of teaching.I am especially good at helping with writing no matter the writer's level. Working on writing is a chance to also work on grammar, punctuation, organization, including outlining, and finally writing the paper. If a student learns this process, they can write a response for any situation.Once the process is learned then writing for other classes, all the way from a short answer to a research paper, becomes so much easier! After graduation and entering the work world, knowing how to write a response is a crucial tool.
