Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is studying the subjunctive in Spanish which can be very confusing, so we went over it. Then we worked on preparing him for an oral quiz. We practiced the questions several times. I told him not to be nervous and when he had the quiz to take a minute to get himself centered. We talked about how mastering a new language is like mastering a sport, something you have to practice over and over again."
"Today the student and I review communications vocabulary in Spanish to prepare for his quiz on Tuesday. We made flashcards with each vocabulary word on them and before practicing them, divided them between verbs, nouns, adjectives and phrases in order to give us an initial clue to their meaning. Then while practicing with the flashcards we made connections to words in English as a way to better remember their meanings. Finally I read the words to the student and he wrote them down one by one, the same exercise that he will have to do for the quiz on Tuesday. By the end of the session he knew what all 37 vocabulary words meant and was able to spell them all with 100% accuracy. He also was left with the flashcards to study on his own before Tuesday and can also work on understanding the difference between the sounds e/i in Spanish since those were the letters hardest to spell for him."
"The student and I worked on his "Water you Measuring?" post-lab questions. This is a continuation from the previous week with hydrated molecule complexes. After viewing his data from his lab, I explained the concepts of the lab and allowed him to answer the questions from his understanding of the material. He did very well with his calculations and his understanding of the material."
"During this session, I discussed with the student how write his lab report for chemistry. He had never written a lab report before so we went over the various sections and what they should entail. We were then able to complete the purpose, materials, procedure and question & answer section. We also worked through various calculations necessary to find the amount of final product. I therefore told him to feel free to contact me via email with any questions or request for edits."
"We went over several rotation and orbit problems for student's test Thursday. She will have to practice a bit using her calculator, but I think she will be fine using the formulas for gravity, centripetal force, and acceleration. She does a good job studying for her tests."
"My session with the student covered her study habits, grade history and experience with teachers in the 11th grade. She did not have her academic materials at hand so we discussed what grades she got last semester, why she got them and what we can work on together to improve them. She expressed that she has been experiencing a considerable amount of stress that has affected her school performance but currently feels as though she is turning a corner and feeling better."
"The student and I worked on building up vocabulary and the present progressive tense. She did verbal and written exercises. She is a fast learner and was very focused during our session. Her homework is to translate some vocabulary and to write it in her note book."
"The student was practicing Quadratic equations, graphing and identifying. He was familiar with the subject. I was impressed by how well he knew the material, but there could be some practice in determining quadratic graphs from equations."
"We discussed magnetic induction: how emf is created by a change in the magnetic flux. Much of the time was spent focusing on applying the right hand rule to determine the direction for current flow or emf, but we also did a number of quantitative problems. I will be sending her some materials on induction for her to have handy when she does the 'concept' and 'application' questions for her course."
"We continued to work on methods for studying AP history. We discussed study techniques and worked on applying them to material that would be covered on tomorrow's exam."
"I mainly worked with the student today on brainstorming ideas for her English paper, as well as continuing to work on Algebra with her."
"During this session, we focused solely on his biology test. We had began to review it last week and made flashcards, and I advised the student to finish making the flash cards and the study guide over the weekend so we would focus only on review the day before the test. We discussed why leaving things until the last minute was problematic and spent the remainder of the session finishing the study guide together. When I asked him how he felt about the test on a scale of 1-10, he said a 7 and that the flashcards were helping him. We made progress by the end of the session and I hope this is reflected in his bio score."
