Session Summaries by ACT Writing Tutors

Atlanta, GA ACT Writing tutoring
We covered ACT English, Reading, and Math. The student seemed to get the English and Math sections, which involved grammatical corrections, stylistic choices, and word problems. He seemed to gain confidence when I told him that we were covering difficult problems. One strategy I gave him was to circle the problems that were taking up too much time and come back to them.

Since we had assessed the student's challenges in reading and science, I chose appropriate flash cards to build his ability in certain areas - determining context-dependent meaning of words, analyzing author's tone, how to find data representation in physics, how to find conflicting viewpoints in earth and space science, and word usage. We discussed any questions that he did not answer correctly at first, identifying the hints that he might have missed on his first attempt. He said that this session was very helpful. He will be taking a practice test in school on March 3rd, and the real test in April. We will continue our sessions on Saturdays to provide further support.

The student completed a Math and Reading section since our last meeting. On Math, he faced timing issues. Today we practiced finding efficient ways of eliminating answers on later questions. Before our next meeting, he will look through the second half of some old tests to practice identifying which questions to solve when low on time and which to eliminate. Timing was also an issue on reading. He sometimes gets tied down by the details, so we did some exercises to practice identifying main ideas while quickly skimming. We finished by introducing the science section. We discussed how the questions are formatted and how he can use the given information to identify where to look and what to look for. He'll complete a practice reading and science passage before our next meeting.

We went over the SAT essay portion. I spent the entire session explaining the specific format the ACT wants. I told him his essay could be no longer than 500 words. We also spent some time going over some basic grammar and punctuation rules that would immediately score him a few extra points. We will discuss these in greater detail next session as well as go over math.

The student will be taking the ACT for the first time in one week. We started this session by going over the questions she got wrong on her practice English test. Overall, she did well. We talked through each question that she got wrong and there weren't any large areas of concern. Next, we started covering the Science section, since we have not covered it in previous sessions. We talked strategies and then worked through each of the 3 types of passages in this section. Going through those 2 sections took almost the whole session, so we spent the closing minutes talking about general strategies for the ACT. I told her that if she has time, she should take an entire practice test this weekend. One of the hardest parts of this test is you have to be sitting for almost 4 hours. Practicing that once before the test can give her a huge advantage.

The student and I focused on science as that is her weak section. I had her go through a science section, passage by passage, and do the questions timed (approximating her extra time amount). Then we checked the answers and went over any she got wrong. She did quite well and really only struggled with one of the passages. Based on how many in total she got wrong, her weighted score should be around a 26. Before our session Thursday she is going to look at some math practice tests on the website, which we will go through then.
