Tonight we did an activity in which I modeled my reading process while the student followed along and tallied the techniques I used to stay focused and keep track of details as I read. She reread the passage I modeled and answered the questions afterwards. Then she read a passage on her own while she guided me through her own process and quickly knocked out all ten of the questions that went with it. She has made fantastic progress on reading. She reads much faster and answers the questions with much more accuracy than she did a month ago. Great work tonight!

We went over ACT English strategy and content review. The student struggled at first to identify the subject, but gradually became better at identifying the "fat" of the sentence and cutting it out. Her attitude was fairly positive; she could ask more questions. I talked about general ACT English strategy, and some strategy regarding how to read questions and answer choices. I left her with practice tests on the English test.

During our first session, after introductions, the student and I dove into the math portion. Slowly and methodically, we made our way through the first practice test. We covered 30 separate questions tackling many of the core issues that appear on the ACT: foil, exponents, word problems, and absolute values. Math seems like it will be our main area of focus and he will try to do some problems on his own before our next session. I'm looking forward to working with him!

We went over math in some depth, focusing on the student's areas of least confidence (geometry, both plane and coordinate). This was more or less a review session, with me just reminding him of formulas he had forgotten and then working through some examples with him. He seemed comfortable using the equations once his memory was jogged and did well on the review questions I assigned him. For next week I asked him to do another math diagnostic to see what else he's missing or forgetting, and a diagnostic in English, Reading, or Science so we can get a sense of where he needs the most help in those sections.

We reviewed the student's essay. It was a solid five-paragraph essay with really good examples. Now she has to work on featuring those examples more prominently and successfully in her essay. To do that, she needs a better thesis statement, and to bring her examples up sooner. We reviewed the math section, and she did better than last time. I think it would run smoother if she were able to recall the FOIL rules. Other than that, I did not see a whole lot of crossover between last week and this week with mistakes in math. She should take the time to read carefully. She scored well in her practice English section, so she's definitely moving ahead. There were about two questions she checked herself with and this time they did not give her a problem! Her score is getting consistently stronger.
