ACT Science Tutoring review by Kristyn in Centennial, CO
The student is planning to take a mock ACT (timed, one-sitting, etc.) this upcoming weekend in order to judge what she needs to focus on in this last week of test prep. Science: She worked through 3 science passages (1 comparative, 2 normal). She did very well with the analytical passages and had a few hang ups in with the comparative passage. We talked about some hints/strategy for the comparative passage. Questions that ask about a specific scientist -> eliminate all answers that address things not mentioned in that specific scientists paragraph(s). Math: She and I worked through 10 math problems. She knows all the necessary concepts, but we worked with identifying which concepts to use in the more difficult questions. This included identifying the type of problem: geometry, coordinate geometry, trig, algebra, etc. Reading: She worked through 2 reading passages (natural science and humanities). She did pretty well with both passages although we only worked on the humanities timed. English: She worked through one English passage and correctly answered 13/15 questions.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Megan in Centennial, CO
We focused on the science and reading sections today, as those were the student's most challenging sections on the practice test. He took a full reading diagnostic test, and we went through the answers he had trouble with and talked through the reasoning behind getting it right. Next, he took science practice tests in the areas that he had the most trouble in, conflicting viewpoints and data synthesis. We talked through the hard questions in these sections as well. This was our first meeting, and he said that the format of doing practice questions together worked out well for him. He expressed an interest in reviewing some content in the English and math sections that he had done well on, so he will do practice tests in those subjects for homework and email me the concepts he feels that he wants to review during our next meeting.

Today the student and I did ACT reading practice. We talked about take-home points and how to get the most out of long passages without being overwhelmed in extra information. She is getting much better at telling me the key points of each passage, which subsequently improves her score. We did practice problems as well and she did a great job.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Nicolette in Centennial, CO
We began by reviewing more geometry and some concepts from last session. We spent some time beginning to discuss trigonometry. Because the student has not learned any in class, I explained the basics of trig ratios and right triangles. We also did a broad review of English section questions. She seemed pretty comfortable with the grammar, but less so with style. Next time, we are going to review some more trigonometry as well as style-based, improving the sentence English questions.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Michael in Centennial, CO
Prior to our session the student made remarks on his improvement. He is feeling quite confident about the main sections of the ACT. He completed some practice English and Science sections, and improved his scores to 28 and 26 respectively. Today, we went over the writing section. I again discussed the requirements and how to properly write an outline. I then asked him to draw up an outline for me and to subsequently complete a writing sample based on an actual prompt. We then went over the sample and I discussed what he could have done to make it better. For next week, I assigned him another practice essay and told him to complete more math, science, and English sections.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Kristin in Centennial, CO
The student finished off the practice test with the last two reading sections. They went pretty well and he seemed to really get the main ideas concepts and being able to create quick summaries. We also worked out a new exercise in reading/ English by reviewing answers as if a four-year-old was asking. We started the next practice test, but only did a bit of English and the science. He did much better on both sections. The time we've put in seems to really have started to pay off.
