We did an overview of each section of the ACT: science, math, reading, English, and the essay, as well what question types are commonly asked on the exam. The student seemed to be pretty well versed in every section: she was most unfamiliar with the science section since she's never taken the ACT before and was not sure what to expect of it. She was very open to learning new concepts and question types; she took notes throughout the session. She seemed to absorb everything pretty quickly. I included some time-saving strategies for the ACT such as answering every question before bubbling them in, memorizing formulas for the math section so she doesn't waste time looking them up on the reference page, working on timing for the essay section, and skimming the questions before reading a literary passage in order to familiarize herself.

We went over a practice English section the student took, then we went over practice questions in English and math using the questions provided virtually through the platform. He seemed confident that he was improving and getting the hang of the questions in the English section. We also went over the writing section of the ACT, what the writers are looking for, and the best way to approach the section. We decided to continue the route of having him complete practice tests or sections of practice tests for us to go over during sessions, as well as completing practice problems with the remaining time. This helps him understand his mistakes, learn from them, and get used to the types of questions on the ACT.

Today, we focused on reading and math. The student had a different strategy for the reading section. he wanted to try taking a little more time initially to read the passage for comprehension vs. skimming it. We tested it out and he was able to stay within the allotted time while improve his accuracy, so we will use this strategy moving forward. Flexibility in strategy is key to adapting to each student's individual needs. In the math section, we worked through problems that are more difficult. He had no experience with certain topics, so I explained those in detail as we did the problems. Next session we will focus on math and science as these were his lowest scores and we can see the biggest improvement in these areas for the next exam.

Tonight, the student and I worked on the practice test sections that she had done this week. We also talked about some general tips for science, and I gave her a handout of some of the questions that are sometimes asked on the ACT where science knowledge is required. We went over all of the questions that she had missed, and then we did several other sections of new problems. We set up a time for another session next week. She is going to try and do one or two more practice tests before we meet, and we will continue to go over the problems that she missed. She should keep track of the time it takes to complete each section. When we meet on Thursday, we will set up a final strategy for the test. She continues to be easy to work with and interested in finding the right answers. I have enjoyed working with her.

We split this into two one-hour sessions. During each we focused primarily on the English section of the ACT. The student showed a lot of improvement from last week. He was able to complete the passages quicker and with fewer mistakes. For the few problems he missed, we discussed the reason why he missed it as well as how to avoid making that same mistake again. During the second hour we also completed two science passages. He is doing really well with them. He is doing great.
