Session Summaries by ACT English Tutors

ACT English Tutoring review by Christi in Georgetown, TX
We began the session reviewing the composition of the critical reading and math portion of the SAT. The student stated this was really all he needed for his school in order to pass. He said he did not have a problem with the math portion but would like to practice next session a little. We next went over an article that was of interest to him that he brought with him. I asked him a few definitions, main purpose of the article and the type of article (persuasive vs. informative). We then moved on to a short logic problem to get him focused on reading comprehension. We then moved on to sentence completions and he did very well with these. After this we moved on to reading comprehension, and this was much more difficult. He made a few great arguments for his responses while others he did not know how to answer. We went over a few test strategies for those types of questions. He did a great job of really articulating his responses and making arguments for how he arrived at an answer. I asked him to complete a math test section and bring it to the next session so that we could review his responses and where he's struggling and needs help. Overall, he did a great job.

We did another critical reading section in the student's prep book, then went over the section previously and corrected it, then this new section and corrected it, focusing on vocabulary. She needs to broaden her vocabulary to do well on this exam.

ACT English Tutoring review by Joshua in Georgetown, TX
We went over the student's practice test: verbal was her weakest section, then math, and she performed solidly in reading. As a result, I have asked her to focus on studying her vocabulary, and I taught her a couple of memorization techniques to expedite the process. The student remained positive throughout this whole process. I think the practice test was enough motivation for her to keep working on her vocabulary.

ACT English Tutoring review by Rickey in Georgetown, TX
We covered questions from the online questions. Specifically, we covered special triangles (45-45-90, 1 * sqrt (2)), unit conversion (cm^3 to m^3, dollars for ounces to cups and vice versa, what the average actually means - e.g. everyone got a score of 70 for a class average of 70). We also did problems on another website. E.g. how to neutralize denominators by multiplying it by one, 1/sqrt(2) times sqrt(2)/sqrt(2). How exponents work. E.g. 10^3 is three sets on one zeros. 100^3 is three sets of two zeros. How to set equations of two lines equal to one another to find their intersection, and how to find the median of consecutive numbers in terms of variables. For the next session, I think it would be beneficial to go over the rules for exponents (e.g. addition for multiplying same base pairs). The student is getting really good at exploring possible routes for solving problems.

ACT English Tutoring review by Terrence in Georgetown, TX
We went over the concepts we didn't get to cover too much last week, namely the long passages and the writing section. The student was having some trouble with vocabulary in questions and answers that was impeding his ability to do the problems, so that was a concern we will have to address in the next session. Otherwise, he was able to get the purpose of the passage and pacing-wise he was doing well. His writing was a big concern as well, but he seemed to gradually get that he had to start approaching the questions differently. We looked at a little math but I left the rest as homework so we could cover it at the beginning of the next session.

ACT English Tutoring review by Edward in Georgetown, TX
The student and I focused on ACT science using her practice book. She seemed enthusiastic to improve. She is great at identifying the assumptions and objective; however attempting to underline key points seems to distract more than assist. Writing things down separately seemed to help, so that is the method we will use from now on.
